I used to wear a ring
Wrapped around my crooked pinky finger
Right hand
Iron circle
Two purple beads
And an amethyst heart at its center
The heart would twirl
The ring just big enough to slide off with ease
It is my mother’s
And I wore it to remind me the love
That I could keep in that heart
Wrapped around my crooked pinky finger
But it slid off unnoticed
Lost forever
Now I wear a ring
Slung around my crooked pinky finger
Right hand
Steel circle
No beads
And a turquoise bird at its center
The bird does not spin
The ring almost too tight to slide off
It is my mother’s
I wear it to replace the heart
Though I cannot replace the love it held
Slung around my crooked pinky finger
I hope the bird will not fly away
And stay forever
