This was a poem for class that refers to the story of The Emperor's New Clothes. In it, an emperor asks two men to make him a new suit and they pretend to make one of "magical, invisible thread" and he falls for it. He then humiliates himself in front of all of his subjects by not wearing anything.
---
I do not know
If it was ignorance
Or a promise of bliss
That cursed the emperor
With humiliation
He was a bird of paradise
Who wanted a new coat of feathers
More glorious than his own
And for a reason unknown
Two ragamuffins seemed to be the perfect pair
To accomplish the task
And this great leader
Fell victim to an overactive imagination
He saw nothing
But believed everything
How can he be so blind?
It is plain as day
In front of his face
And yet he does not see
Why?
Was it his imagination
Or lack of sense?
But perhaps sense
Isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
Sense is but the broken wing
Of a noble flyer
I just want to fly away
From these mindless
NonsensicalSensible people
For they are people after all
People with lives of ignorance
Hopes of bliss
Each a beautiful feather
On a community coat
I cannot blame them for their dreams
Or their trust
In crazy forces
It is quite NonsensicalSensible of them
And that is all that can be expected of the people
I have dreams, too
Afterall
But amidst their nightdreams and daymares
They see not their own feathers before them
The glorious colors
Exquisite textures
Unique framing
They are so beautiful
If only they could believe what they are trying not to notice
Why can’t they just see what is before them?
