Sam looked down at hell, and saw the human known as Gabriel in horrible pain. And did nothing. Gabriel screamed, he yelled, he tried to fight it, and Sam did nothing.
"Sam come on," Dean said, appearing beside him and putting a hand on his shoulder. "You've got to get him out of there."
"Why?" Sam asked.
"If not for Gabriel, at least do it for me."
"How would you benefit from this?"
"Through Castiel," Dean said. "I'm bonded to him, remember? But he's just miserable all the time."
"I'll just remove the bond then," Sam said, flying them both to Castiel's side. Dean made a growling sound and stepped between Sam and Cas. "Dean?"
"Leave the bond Sam," Dean said, his voice low and dangerous. Sam looked at him in confusion while Cas watched both of them with wide eyes.
"I thought you hated it."
"Seven months Sammy. I put up with him seven months. You think in that amount of time I wouldn't come to like him? That was your original plan wasn't it?"
"My plan was foolish," Sam growled. "And it's turned you into just another one of those human loving angels."
"You used to be one yourself," Dean said. "And I can see why now, and why you did this to me. So if this is the way it's going to be, then I'll just have to get you back."
"How?" Sam scoffed.
"Save Gabriel."
"No. He deserves it."
"Save him."
"No."
"I'll call John if you don't."
Sam went silent at that, swearing under his breath. A moment later he was gone, leaving Dean and Cas.
Dean sighed and flopped down beside Cas. "Dean, why are you trying so hard to get Gabriel back?" Cas asked.
"For one, it'll make you happy again," Dean said, smiling up at Cas. Cas wasn't doing so well since the death of Gabriel. He hadn't been sleeping or eating, and as much as Dean had tried to comfort him it hadn't worked. "And two, it'll help Sammy."
"Do you really think Sam will help him?" Cas asked, a glimmer of hope shining in his eyes. Dean nodded.
"He'll do anything to avoid John."
"Who exactly is John?"
"The angel who raised us, you could pretty much call him our dad. But him and Sammy had a lot of disagreements and don't get on well. However John is still the higher angel and can order Sam around."
Cas nodded. "So he'd rather save Gabriel?"
"I sure as hell hope so."
~~ Gabriel woke up, in an empty motel room. He looked around wildly for the torturing devices he had seen just moment earlier. But there was nothing.
"Hello?" Gabe called, but there was no reply. He stood up shakily, weak on his knees. He inspected the room and saw nothing, except for a feather on the bed. "Sam?" Gabe whispered as he picked it up.
Gabriel walked out of the motel room, to see a normal human world, and almost yelled in happiness.
"I'm back," he whispered. "I'm back, I'm alive..."
Then he remembered something. Dean had explained the full thing of angel bonding once. Or at least how an angel could get bonded. You could get half bonded by the hand of another angel, like Dean had been. And you could get fully bonded, one of the ways being from pulling the human out of hell.
