(Quick and important note, Sam's parts in this are a little bit back, right after his death and before Gabe's)

Sam opened his eyes.

He blinked once, twice, looking around at his surroundings.

This was impossible. There was no way he should be alive right now. He was stabbed, he'd felt it, he'd felt his grace burn out and disappear.

Yet, here he was.

The sound echoed through the bunker and Cas fell silent, his eyes wide with shock and fear as he looked at the door. Dean opened the door as he ran over, rushing inside.

They found exactly what they'd expected. Gabriel lying still on the bed, a gun in his hand and blood everywhere.

"No..." Cas whispered. "No this can't...Gabriel..."

"Shit," Dean muttered, looking at the body before back at Cas. "Cas come on, you don't need to see this."

"That's...Gabriel...that's my brother...he's...gone..."

"Cas come on," Dean said, walking over to Cas and standing in between Cas and Gabe. "I'll clean up the blood and everything, you don't need to see that."

Cas choked out a sob as Dean gently turned Cas away and started guiding him away from the room. Dean nodded to Adam as he walked past and Adam moved to where Gabe was.

"There has to be something," Cas said, his voice shaky. "Something, anything."

"Cas I don't think..." Dean said, sighing. "I can't bring him back from hell if he's down there, and I don't have the power to take someone out of heaven."

"Okay then crossroads demon, anything. I'll sell my soul, we'll bring him back."

"Cas that will only start this whole cycle again...this started with Gabe selling his soul to bring you back. You can't keep cheating death because one day it'll get you both killed."

"He's my brother Dean!" Cas yelled. "I can't just...I need him..."

"I get it," Dean said quietly. "I have Sam remember. And guess where he currently is."

Cas went silent for a second.

"And guess what? Sam can't come back. Angels don't come back. We don't go to heaven or to hell when we die, we're just gone. Sam's gone. Forever. So take a second to consider how I feel right now. I just lost my brother and I'm not losing you too."

"I..." Cas said. "I'm sorry..."

Dean sighed. "It's okay. Look just...don't do anything stupid okay? I couldn't deal..."

"Literally," Cas muttered. Dean winced.

"Too soon," he said. "Even if we do try and bring back Gabriel...are you sure you want to? How do you think he'll feel about that, without Sam?"

"But I need him," Cas said, his voice becoming choked up again.

"I know Cas," Dean said, pulling Cas forward to wrap his arms around him, letting Cas bury his head against his chest. "I know..."

Sam sat up. He was on a bed. Not in any place he recognized, yet it felt familiar. It was a house, just an ordinary house. White walls, a few small decorations here and there. A king sized bed.

Sam thought for a second and then attempted to spread his wings. As they unfolded from his back he sighed in relief. He still had his wings.

But...there was still something missing. He didn't feel right.
