Grow Old Without You (Chapter 37)
LAUREN
It's already 10 in the morning, and the kids are still asleep. Well, Keana still acts like a kid, so she's still considered as one. Sinu brought us some papers and letters. She was also staying for Brunch, 'cos she missed the two girls.
"The facility called. Mija doesn't want to have visitors, again." She said in her think Cuban accent. I felt my heart drop. I thought the girls are seeing her this week.
"The girls are going to be upset." I sighed as she nodded her head.
"She signed the papers for custody." She said as I felt my mouth drop. "You can bring Lana home."
"But Mami." I sighed as she nodded her head, already understanding what I was about to say.
"You've dreamt about this. You wanted this to happen, and this is your chance. But not like this, I know. You'll be fine there. We will visit." She hugged me tight, so tight I could barely breathe.
"I want to make sure she's really fine with it. I want to make sure her decision is final." I said as Sinu kissed my cheek.
"I will let them know you'll visit, but I'm not reassuring you she'll talk to you." She said as I nodded my head.
Am I doing the right thing?
--
"Good morning, Nenas!" Sinu said when she said the twins walking in the kitchen. Keana was behind them, rubning her eyes. "And to you too, Keana Marie."
"Morning, Sinuhe." Kea mumbled, plopping herself on the dining room chair.
"Abuela, what are you doing here?" Lana asked hugging her grandmother. She knows something's up.
"Can't I visit my favorite grand daughters?"
"We're your only granddaughters." Kara mumbled as Sinu tapped Kara's butt.
"Hey, I missed you both. No need to be sassy." Sinu said as she kissed both the twins' heads.
"Dropping off some things before I bring Aunt Sofi to NY. She's attending school there for the fall."
Sofi's moving to NY? Our little butterfly!
"Wow. Sofi got into--"
"NYU." Sinu smiled proudly.
"Wow. Camz would be so happy!" I softly said as Sinu walked to me, hugging me tight.
"Everyone's dream school, huh?" Keana asked as we just nodded her heads. "So you girls know where to aim for, okay?" Keana told the girls as they scrunched up their noses.
"You should actually think about what you want to take in College this early. You're 12, 6 more years, you'll be in college." Sinu said as I shook my head giggling.
"No, they're staying this young forever. No college for my nuggets." I said squeezing the twins in a tight embrace. "No growing up."
--
I gave the kids their letters last night, and I haven't really seen them this morning. Keana said they were still upstairs in their room, and it was also the perfect time to read mine. I sat on the porch, sipping on my tea, as I opened the letter. Her all too familiar handwriting scribling on the pad.
