Grow Old Without You (Chapter 64)

Camila

"This will not help. You can't shout with the children in here!" I screamed, matching hers. "And wash your filthy mouth, Jauregui. The kids are here."

For a second there were no cries anymore. There were hushed whimpers that confused me. It was a wailing mess just seconds ago. Where the hell did the cries go?

I saw the kids huddled together. Kara calming Asha down, and Lana hugging the now calm Amin. How did they do that? How did Amin trust the twins that fast? Or is Amin just intimidated by Lauren?

"Mama, how do you change a diaper?" Kara asked, covering her nose with one hand.

"Lana, try and feed Amin." I said as she nodded her head, bringing the boy to the floor. "I'll show you." I walked to Kara, brining the wipes and the diaper. "Actually, we need to give her a bath too. So she could get out of her dirty clothes." I explained to Kara as I heard the door shut loudly, scaring the kids.

Oh Lauren.

--

Lauren came back with the laundry a few hours later. Maybe she spent her time with Dinah? I don't know. I made sure I spent my time with my kids. Asking them about school, and everything that I've missed. I asked how Lauren coped, and how they coped. I asked how they felt. You know, boring mom stuff. They also asked how my month went. They cried so much when I told them about Abia and everything they went through. I told them the sad reality of life, how being inhumane affects not only the adults, but also the children.

"Mama, I wouldn't know how I'd be if I lived in Syria. Losing your parents, no food, no one to help." Lana said softly.

"That was why I went in the first place. I kept picturing you girls being in their situation." I sighed. "I didn't know I'd meet Abia and the kids."

"Mama, what will happen with Amin and Asha?" Kara asked as I looked back at Lauren. She was eagerly waiting for the answer.

"I can't answer that, babe. It all goes down to the authorities over here. But since Syria's still messed up, and the authorities are not authorities, I can't answer that." I said truthfully.

"But you can't just leave them here, right? They don't trust anyone." Lana answered.

"Lana--"

"You can't leave them behind Mama. Abia treated you as family. Nobody gets left behind."

"This is not a conversation I need to have with you, girls. " I sighed. "Can we all just cuddle up and sleep. I missed all of you, and I miss being in a bed, with fluffy covers and pillows. You know, the luxuries?" I changed the topic, wanting to sleep as soon as I can, and not wanting to talk about it without talking to Lauren.

"The cot is in the hallway. I'll grab it." Lauren said walking to the door as the twins walked to me giving me big hugs.

"Love you, Mama. Hope we keep Amin and Asha with us." Kara whispered to my ear.

"Love you too, Kara." I smiled at her.

"Love you, Ma. I'm glad you, Amin and Asha are safe. I hope we get to be their family now." Lana said kissing Amin and Asha's heads.
