Grow Old Without You (Chapter 53)

LAUREN

Lucy's mom is dead. Lucy just called and told me about her passing away in her sleep. Her mom had cancer. I remember Lucy sending me emails telling me how her mother discovered she had breast cancer 5 years ago. It was already spreading on her lungs when they discovered it. It was already too late for anything else, and even having the best doctors and all the money in the world wouldn't matter anymore.

It was hard for Lucy. Keana, Kara and I visited Colombia 3 years ago, when her mom celebrated her birthday. She was already weak, and thin, but she was happy during her celebration. The whole family was there, even Tio Carlos and his new family. Lucy's parents are separated, and seeing them all in one celebration was nice. Lucy on the other hand was not the same anymore. She was more reserved, and smiled only a little. The sparkle in her eyes was gone, like she didn't believe in anything anymore. Like she lost hope in the world. It was heartbreaking

Lucy and I go way back. 5th grade to be exact. She was shy, and quiet. I later discovered she was smart and had these views on the world that any person would call her weird. She thinks alot, and had these conspiracy theories. I didn't think she was weird, or crazy. I loved how she talked about things with so much passion, and love.

I've spent almost all my weekends during middle school with Lucy's family in Miami. Her parents got separated, so Lucy had to celebrate the holidays in Colombia, where her mother is. Sometimes, her dad's in Colombia too, but Carlos Vives is everywhere.

Lucy and I sent emails when I moved to Italy. She wanted to visit, but due to her and mine's schedules, we couldn't do it. 5 years ago, when she discovered her mom had cancer, she called me. It was already too late. The breast cancer had already spread to her lungs, and no amount of money, or good doctors could do anything about it. That broke Lucy.

Kara was 8 when Keana and I visited them in Colombia. It was Herlinda's birthday, and everyone that's part of their life is in invited. I brought my daughter so she could meet her Aunt Lucy, and that made Lucy happy, even for just a while. And now, 3 years later, I'm on my way to Bogota again.

"Mommy, I don't remember Tia Lucy." Kara said as we rode the private plane to Bogota. Carlos was kind enough to fly us from Miami to Bogota.

"Okay. I'll show you a picture, maybe you'll remember her." I said as I grabbed my phone and looked for a picture of Lucy. "Here. That's Tia Lucy." I said as I showed the twins the picture.

"I don't remember her." Kara said sadly as I kissed her head.

"It's okay, baby. You'll meet her again soon okay?" Camila said as she continued reading her book.

"Love, what did Cassie say about the house?" Cassie was the interior designer, and the over all in charge of the construction.

"She was actually happy for us to be leaving for a few days. She says she gets to have construction at night, and actually did the dance move for Work From Home, which was actually funny if you ask me. She was a fan, when Work From Home came out years ago." Camila smiled at me as I giggled, imagining Cassie actually dancing.

"She also sang Mama's part. It was funny." Kara laughed as I shook my head.

"Atleast we'll have the construction done when we come home. That's all I want." I said as everyone nodded their heads.

We arrived Bogota, and we were driven straight to Herlinda's house. It wasn't far, and as soon as we arrived, I ran inside and looked for Lucy.
