    The reason behind the red eye was to see if the cluster had emerged. The cluster is an ultra powerful forced fusion. They wanted to make sure that they were safe while viewing it. The Red eye was super durable and took many hits. They only thing strong enough to destroy it was Rose's Laser Light Canon.  When nothing came back from it, Peridot was sent to check things out and see if the cluster had emerged and destroyed it.
