Overestimation?

"My mission has been compromised! My Escort.."

Hold up! As you may have noticed, that's Peridot's message to Yellow Diamond in, "Cry for Help." Notice that she called Jasper her escort and said the mission was hers. She didn't call Jasper a warrior or soldier or even bodyguard! Just an escort. She even laid claim over her! This shows that Jasper wasn't some big, tough soldier that we think she was! Peridot was in charge and Jasper took it upon herself to start calling orders hence Peridot's frustration.

This storyboard artist and writer, Raven Molisee, even said this statement, "The reason for Jasper wearing a cape in "The Return" was to look "intimidatingly fabulous".

Intimidatingly fabulous? She was trying to look scarier that what she actually was. She thought that the gems there would see her as some weak, lower-class Quartz warrior, so she added a little "Make-up," Jasper is the Make-up stone after all.

It's kind of like when you go to a new level of school, Middle School to High School for example. You dressed to impress. You wanted everyone to see you as a highly mature person and not just some lowly middle schooler who just moved up to the next level.
