So we know that Garnet was the first fusion between two different gems. She was also probably the inspiration behind forced fusions. But what if she was also the inspiration for gem powered machines?
Think about it, after seeing two gems of different types fuse, Blue Diamond had the nagging thought in her head of what else gems could do. We know she was a very harsh ruler so what if when gems overstepped their boundaries, she punished them by putting them in torture devices.
As a mirror, Lapis would constantly have to relive the pain of the past. Constantly reflecting her thoughts and what others told her to. She'd never be able to do what she was able to do like before. In "mirror gem", Lapis doesn't really seem to hate the Crystal gems for their rebellion, she hated them for keeping her locked up. Specifically, Garnet. She held Garnet down with the water hand and she screamed in terror when Garnet reached for her mirror. As if she has some kind of pent up feelings toward Garnet.
In "Jailbreak," Lapis didn't seem to care when Jasper called the gems traitors to their Homeworld. She even helped them to escape Jasper. In fact, it's almost as if she was punishing Jasper for what she said.
I believe Lapis was going to Earth to become a Crystal Gem and when Blue Diamond found out, she, using Hammurabi's code, called her a backstabber so she stabbed Lapis in the back and put her in a torture device, sending Lapis to Earth to be with the rebels as she wanted. Lapis was overjoyed to be on Earth with people that would understand her but no, they just used her and kept her hostage as well. Lapis felt betrayed and alone, for she had given up everything to be with the rebels and yet, they didn't welcome her like she expected.
"They don't care about other gems, Steven."
And to her, they really didn't.
