'We are all afraid to love because we are too afraid to give ourselves to someone we might lose.'' - unknown

"Mother dearest! I'm heading out," I yelled from the bottom of the stairs. It's just another day and another visit to Travis.

Travis is a friend.

Travis is a really, really, good time.

My mom came through the kitchen door still wearing her infamous pink apron---symbolic in all its glory. My mother, unlike most people, bakes herself busy in the kitchen after a breakup. I call it, break-up baking. There's always an interesting combination of aromas when she's break-up baking, because, she makes every dish and dessert imaginable. You have a glorious breakfast burrito, a chicken salad for lunch and a Chicken Pasta Penne dish for dinner. That's day one of her break-up baking. Sometimes it goes on for weeks.

---You'll never hear me complain out loud about her post breakup ritual. What teenager doesn't love sweets? The only thing that bothers me is how often these break-up bakes happen. In just one calendar month, she was having break-ups in the weekly. She has very poor taste in men.

My mom, Cassandra Clarke Brooks, is a good person, but she has an obsessive need to always be in a relationship. She lives by the quote of ''when one door closes, another will open.'' The unfortunate thing for my mom is that the door always slams shut on her. ----She's quick to say she's in 'love' and she's quick to find that one good characteristic among the million bad.

''Where you going, Maisie?" She asked patting her hands dry with the apron.

I slipped my arms through my jacket, "Travis's place. His family invited me over for games night."

"Well that was very thoughtful of them to invite you. Why don't you take some cookies with you."

"I guess I could take some chocolate chip cookies over."

"Come, I'll help you."

I followed her back into the kitchen and watched as she placed some of the cookies on a plastic plate, placing wrap on top.

Travis will be very happy to know today was one of her baking days. He's been eating Mac and Cheese and ordering in for the last 5 days. His parents are away on vacation which has meant if Travis wants to eat, he gotta fetch the food for himself.

"Thanks mom, I'm sure they'll love it."

**

When I arrived at Travis's I let myself in using the key he gave me. When he said he made me one, I was reluctant to take it. First off, we're not dating and I don't want to give him the wrong idea. Boyfriends give girlfriends a key when they are thinking more seriously about their future with them. There will be no future for Travis and I and—I'm pretty proud of myself for being transparent with him 'bout it.

Inside the house, I took off my shoes and made my way through the winding hallways into the living room. Travis was sitting on the couch just as I left him yesterday---attentively playing his video game.

"Earth to Trav."

Travis briefly took his eyes off the game to glance over in my direction. The first thing he noticed was the plate in my hands. Boys. "What you got there?"

"Cookies," I said walking over to the coffee table, settling the plate down. "My mom had me bring them over for your parents."

"Still haven't told her?"

I huffed and sank down in the spot next to him. "Course not. If I told her we were all alone, she'd never let me step into this house." My mom has not trusted us alone together since the incident----she caught us in a very compromising position.

"Hmm, that was a fucken good night."

"If only you had faster reflexes, you could have covered yourself better."

"If she wasn't meant to see any of that, she wouldn't have. She secretly wanted to know what I was workin' with."

I swatted his arm and rolled my eyes. "Your sick."

Travis chuckled and placed his free hand on my thigh. He stroked it delicately then returned his attention to his game. Neither myself or the cookies could hold his attention for long.

I get annoyed with Travis quite a alot. I hate that I'm always having to compete against his video game for his attention. If he's going to stroke my thigh like that, then he best keep it going. "Is it so wrong to ask for your undivided attention?"

He sighed, annoyed. "Not this again. Chill."

I yanked the game console from his hand and shut off the game. I don't do well with sharing. I grabbed the TV remote and shut off the screenTravis didn't put up a fight. He knew me well enough now to know that his virtual game was over but my game always felt better.

Travis lifted me up and placed me delicately on his lap.

I smiled and wrapped my arms around his neck, pressing my chest against his. His hands traveled down my back in search of a zipper---that was moving too fast.

Travis liked to rush and sometimes I liked to play a little classier. You know, enjoy the moment, almost make it last forever. I also had a thing that I preferred beds.

I pulled his hands off my back, "Upstairs. "I got up from his lap and pulled him upright. "I've missed your room."

I followed Travis up the stairs and we walked down the hall---passing his room. "We just missed your room, genius."

"I figured we could use my 'rents bed. I'm sure it's been lonely too," he winked suggestively.

I crinkled my nose. The last place I want to have sex is in his parents bed. It's creepy. I don't want to be thinking about whether his mom had ever grabbed onto the bed frame pillars while her husband was pounding into her.

"I don't think so.."

"It's just a bed, Maisie."

"No, it's your parents bed." It's their marriage bed and the one thing I don't do is fuck a marriage or fuck in a marriage bed.
