PLS PUT YOUR PLAYLIST HERE

I threw two bags of spaghetti noodles into the shopping cart. Though I appreciated the time away from Mandy, I was nearing the end of the shopping list. I had one more item to find and then I was a free woman. Hopefully before I get back, Levi is home to entertain his mother. I was running out of nice words to say to her.

I began pushing the cart down the aisle when my phone rang. I pushed the cart to the side to free up the aisle for other shoppers then reached into my pocket. I pulled out my phone and saw that it was an unknown caller. I decided to answer it anyway.

"Hello?"

"Is this Maisie Brooks?"

"Yes, who's this?" The voice on the other end was vaguely familiar. It was a voice that I knew I heard before but I couldn't recall who it was.

"Maisie, its wow, so good to hear your voice. I wasn't expecting you to answer I---"

"Who's this?" I asked again, cutting him off mid-sentence.

"I should have figured you wouldn't recognize my voice. It's Daxton, your father."

I became silent.

Daxton Brooks was the last person I expected to call me.

We had a complication relationship but I wouldn't even call it that.

We were beyond estranged.

"Maisie, are you there?"

I hissed, the emotions getting the best of me. "I told you that I never wanted to speak to you ever again. I meant it when I said it."

"I know you're angry and I can't blame you. I'm getting older, Maisie and I'd really like to somehow make this work," he spoke sincerely. "We're family."

"We're not a family," my teeth grind. " I hope jail is speeding up the aging process for you."

"I'm sorry. I really am."

"Sorry doesn't fix the damage you've done."

I had a father from birth till I was there. Then at 3, he was taken away from me because he chose a terribly wrong path.

He ruined lives.

He ruined our family.

"I need you to come visit me, Maisie. I don't want to die here and not get a chance to tell you in person how sorry I am."

"I told you that I want absolutely nothing to do with you."
