You and your fiance Patrice were spending Thanksgiving with your family at your family home on the outskirts of Boston. You and Patrice met each a Bruins signing event that you brought your little cousin to since he was a die hard Bruins fan. He gave you his number and you guys have been together ever since. He really was amazing despite what people told you.
Patrice pulled the car into the driveway of your parent's home. There were already a few other cars meaning there was already some family there. We went inside the house and You shouted to your mom telling her you were there. "Kitchen sweetheart!" We went in there and she hugged the both of us. "Dad's in the living room with all the boys." We nodded and went to the living room to greet everyone. A weight hung over the room because your youngest brother Alex was in the military and he's been away for almost 6 months now so it's been tough not having him around and not knowing what could happen to him. You looked around the room while the guys talked and your eyes fixed on Alex's military photo that hung proudly on the wall next to school pictures of you and your older sister. You missed him so much. You'd think you'd be used to it after 4 years but it never gets better. There was a knock on the door and mom yelled for you to get it. You got up and went over and there was a soldier there with a flag, dog tags, and a letter. "No no no." "I'm so sorry, we will be missed." He gave the stuff to you and then left. You closed the door and screamed and fell to the ground. Everyone ran over. "What's wrong?" "A-alex i-is dead." you sobbed. Patrice took the stuff and gave it to your dad and pulled you into his arms. "Shh it's okay." You shook your head and cried.
Funeral- It was an extremely emotional day for you and all your family. Your brothers son Luke came over with tears funny down his cheeks. He ran into your arms and you tried your best to calm him down. "Mama said daddy no wake up!" "I know bubba." "I miss him." "I miss him too but we'll do it together okay?" "Okay." We all sat down because the funeral was about to start. "Up next you invite Alex's older sister Sydney to the podium." You stood up and took a deep breath before walking up there. "Hi everyone as you all know I am Alex's sister. I never expected having to stand up here and give a speech like this. Alex knew the risk that came with being in the military and I remember a conversation I had with him before he left and he said he was scared. I told me that he didn't have to go but he looked right me in the eye and said that he had to go because he wasn't going to sit at home and work some 9-5 office job when he could be out there making a difference protecting everything he loved. He said that as long as he lived he would be out there protecting us and he did just that. He died protecting us. Alex was probably my best friend growing up, we did everything together. I knew he would always be there to protect me from everything that could hurt me. I can't thank him enough for being the best little brother. Over the last 3 days I have learned that Alex died doing something he always said he'd do. He said I would die before I let anything hurt anyone I love. I learned and accepted that he's not coming back no matter how many tears I cry, prayers I pray, or wishes on shooting stars I make. From this day on life will never be the same but Alex wouldn't want to see all of us sitting here upset and crying. I know for a fact, he'd say that even though he's gone there's still a million more reasons to smile." Everyone clapped and you went back to your seat wiping the tears that fell. Patrice wrapped you in his arms as you tried to calm down. You knew you weren't going to get through this alone.
