Chapter 39

___

Austin's POV

"Who are you?" She asked and my heart sunk.

"Austin..." I muttered before pulling open the door and walking out.

How could she not remember me?

I walked out of the hospital to get some 6:00 evening air. Shutting my eyes, I held in the sea of tears threatening to spill.

It was peacefully silent for a while until I heard a click and saw a flash.

Of course.

I opened my eyes to see a mob of cameramen flashing their cameras at me.

My first instinct was to turn around and walk back into the hospital.

"Austin! What happened to Alyssa?"

"Austin! Is Alyssa pregnant?"

"Austin! Is she going to be okay?"

Their questions were shot at me, only making me pick up my pace. I ran into the elevator before a paparazzi could even get near me.

Floor two.

The elevator doors opened and I quickly walked back into room 307. I wasn't ready to face Alyssa yet, but I didn't want to face the media either. At least here, I'm safe. They don't know which room I'm in, right?

I shut the door once in got into the room, almost out of breath.

"What happened?" Robert confronted me.

"There's ... Paparazzi outside." I caught my breath before standing up straight.

"How'd they find us?" Alex chipped in.

"Well they're probably the ones who chased us..." I raised an eyebrow like it was the most obvious thing.

I turned my eyes to Alyssa who looked like she had fallen asleep again. My face fell when I saw her.

I made my way over to the chair next to her bed and watched her. Like I have for the past days.

"Does she really not remember us?" I murmured, taking her hand in mine once again.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alex shaking his head.

This can't be happening.

"Maybe... Maybe I should've just stayed with Taylor..." I whispered, looking at my feet.

"Dude, you know she's no good for you." Alex disagreed.

"Yeah, but I'm no good for Alyssa... I mean look. Look where we are. All because of me. This would have never happened if I was still with Taylor." I shut my eyes tightly.

"Maybe I should go back to her." I mumbled to myself.

___

Alyssa's POV

I was released from the hospital a few days later. The boy who claimed he had been sitting next to me every day took me home.

"Is this your car?" I asked randomly, fidgeting in my seat.

"No, it's my mom's. Mine's kind of destroyed from the truck..." He answered, keeping his eyes on the road.

"Oh..." I said, propping my elbow on the door.

The rest of the car ride was silent, expect the soft radio that only a mouse could hear. I didn't really want to start any conversation because I know it wouldn't last long.

"Is this my house?" I asked, getting out of the car and stepping onto the driveway.

"Yeah. I live right next door." He said blandly, stepping out of the car too.

"Are my parents home?" I looked around the front yard.

"It's 3:30, they're probably at work." Austin answered, leading me to the front door.

"Okay..." I pretended to wander around before catching up with him at the door.

"How do you know where the house key is?" I asked as he opened the front door.

"Um, I just know..." He scratched the back of his head and motioned me to walk in.

I did so and he lead me up to my room, oddly.

"How do you know where my room is?" I asked.

He didn't answer, instead, he just sighed as if he were annoyed. I plopped down on my bed and stared at him.

"What are you doing?" I asked, crossing my legs.

"Just thinking." He ran his fingers through his hair and looked at the floor.

"Okay." I simply nodded and looked around the room. I spotted a picture of me on the nightstand so I picked it up.

"Who's this?" I pointed to a young boy standing next to me in the picture. We looked about 10 or 11.

"That's... That's..." He stuttered.

___

Austin's POV

"That's... That's..." I stuttered.

That's me.

"Um, I have to go." I murmured before walking out the door.

What am I going to do... ?

I basically just lost my girlfriend, all because of me. How could I be so stupid.

I trudged down the stairs and to the front door, yanking it open before walking out.

I stuffed my hand in my pocket, searching for my car keys but didn't find them. I must have left them in Alyssa's room. Turning back around, I opened the front door and slowly walked back up the stairs. I walked down the hall until I reached Alyssa's room.

She looked different. Like she was crying or something. I watched her discretely behind the door. I carefully took another step but the floor just had to creak, giving me away. Her head shot up and her eyes bored into mine.

Her eyes widened and without a warning, she took off out the room. I looked back at her and realized that I should go after her. She raced down the stairs and sprinted out the door.

I wasn't far behind her but she did run fast.

"Alyssa! Wait!" I reached a hand out even though she was about 10 feet away.

Where was she going?

Then I noticed my surroundings. She was running to Madison's house.
