I ended up getting called down to Q's grand office by the man himself. I gulped, worried that he would say something about me messing up or that I should back off of Julia because they started dating recently. That second one seemed quite a bit more accurate than the first, though it was plausible.
I ran into Kotoko on the way in. Her pink hair was in its typical ponytails, her dress under the black jacket the same color. Her yellow eyes shone brightly. "Hi, Fee-Fee!!" Kotoko cried, running up to me and taking my hand. "You look worried... What's wrong?"
"I have to go see Q... I hope he doesn't yell at me..." I whispered.
"It'll be okay. And if it isn't, I can go cuddle with his cats and he'll soften up faster than a pillow!" Kotoko grinned. "He's always had a weak spot for kids and kittens."
"That's true," I agreed. "Anyways, I should get going. Q might get mad at me if I'm too tardy to our meeting."
"I'll see you later, Fee-Fee!" Kotoko smiled, waving as I walked away.
I made my way into Q's office. His desk was in the center of the room, the best place for him to command everybody around him. L was leaning against his desk, talking to Q about something I ducky understand. My ears were sensitive to the loud noises that L was always spurting from that mouth of hers.
"Um... Q?" I squeaked once I was within earshot of the duo.
L waved. "Nice to see you, Felix. Question: on a scale of one to squee, how much do you ship Q and D?" she asked.
"Um... 5111," I said simply. It was the first number that sprang to my mind most of the time, and it got its fair share of use when L was asking her constant questions again.
"Yay!" L squealed as she skipped away, most likely to update the complex pinboard she kept on her wall back in her office. She called it her 'Ship Board' for whatever reason. I didn't even try to understand it for the sake of my ears.
"What is it that you wanted to talk about, Q?" I asked, making my way up to his desk cautiously. Q wasn't the type to yell at people for no reason, but people always found something to yell at me about.
"I... I have to go on the field tomorrow," Q told me.
I gasped dramatically, realizing that this was about as likely to happen as Ms. Kirigiri no longer yelling at me. Or if M and N stooped going out on dates after work. Or if I stopped flinching at loud noises.
"Then... Why did you want to see me?" I asked, slightly afraid of the reaction that he would provide me.
"I don't want to go alone, but D is busy, so... Would you go out onto the field with me?" Q questioned, his eyes slightly pleading.
I gasped. "A-are you serious?!" I squeaked, my voice cracking as I flinched at the sound of my own voice.
Q nodded. "Of course I'm serious. I'm not like some of the other agents here who toy with people's emotions for no reason. Are you in?" Q asked me, beginning to tap his fingers along the desk in front of him.
I didn't hesitate for even a second. "Of course I'm in!" I exclaimed. I didn't even mind that my voice was rising in volume out of my excitement.
"Great," Q said, turning back to his computer. He typed on the keyboard with stunning accuracy. "I made a device for tomorrow's mission."
"Oh, yeah... What is it that we're doing on the field tomorrow?" I asked sheepishly, feeling a jittery blush rise on my cheeks.
Before L asks, no, I do not like him that way. Clare is my type. Besides... I'm sure that Ms. Kirigiri would kill me if I told her that I cared for him that way. She's always been a little bit protective of him. L drinks it right up and won't stop smiling when she hears about that stuff.
"M told me that there was a forensics officer messed up and we need to get fingerprint tests from all of the victims. One of the bodies doesn't have prints for whatever reason, and we need to get a test done for it before M's attitude goes all bi-"
"Kotoko's in the room," I said, cutting him off. Q closed his mouth and never finished that sentence.
"What's this about me?"
Kotoko came bouncing up to us. She was holding a doll in her fingers loosely. I remembered that one. Kotoko told me once it was the last one her parents gave her a few years ago. Before... Before...
"Hi, Kotoko," I smiled. "You seem happy."
"Julia is taking me to the amusement park tomorrow! She says it'll be fun!" Kotoko grinned.
"I'm glad you're excited," I said. "I hope you have a nice time."
"Was it the amusement park where murders occur all the time? Happy House or something?" Q asked.
"What murders?" Kotoko questioned. "Julia never told me anything about murders there..."
"Never mind," Q told her, most likely so that she wouldn't be scared. She's been having bad reactions to things like that since the recent investigations into the serial killer Ms. Kirigiri takes so much interest in.
"So... I'll be seeing you here tomorrow? At nine?" Q asked, turning back to me.
I nodded. "I'll be here. Come on, Kotoko. I can walk you back to Ms. Kirigiri," I said to Kotoko.
"Okay, Fee-Fee! Let's go!" Kotoko exclaimed, taking my hand and skipping alongside me to go and find Ms. Kirigiri.
I dropped Kotoko off and began to walk home. My first field mission in ages...! I couldn't believe that the day had finally come where I could do something like this...!
Maybe I'd even get a letter like everybody else!!
