Mondays were Troye's least favorite days to see Dan lately. Mondays were the days where they targeted a problem and for the next two weeks that was the area that was concentrated on for growth. Dan thought it would be best that way, so now they visited him every other day for a shorter amount of time so that they could debrief and continue toward their goal.
This Monday in particular Troye was feeling quiet confident, he had been doing quite well. The amount of full fledge panic attacks had decreased and he was getting better at communicating when he was feeling uneasy. Tyler was doing well too, he wasn't refusing any food and he began to tell his other friends that he was gay. They were making progress, it was slow but it was still progress.
Thats what lead Troye to be so confused as to way Tyler seemed so nervous. He was bouncing his leg and he had Troye's hand in his own, cracking his knuckles, a clear indicator that he was nervous. Dan said he needed a moment to finish the notes from his last session so he was quickly typing at the computer on his desk. Before long he sat in his usual spot and opened their folder.
"So how did the super fun surprise go this weekend" Dan asked with a smile clicking his pen and crossing his right leg over his left knee.
"It was awesome" Troye beamed "We went the the pride parade festival thing. We had a great time"
"Wow that sounds great, what did you do there?" He asked
"We ate food from food trucks, watched the parade, met a drag queen, and just walked around" Troye smiled as Tyler continued to crack the knuckles of his fingers
"How did you do with the food portion Ty?" Dan asked after scribbling a few words into his notes
"I um...I did good. I tried lots of different stuff, I had a bit of a stomach ache after but that was it" Tyler said
Dan looked up from under his lashes with a stern look, "no purging" he stated
"No" Tyler said confidently. It felt good for him to admit that, it wasn't that he didn't consider it, it was more that he couldn't bare the idea of having to admit that he did it again. He needed to break the cycle, so every time he woke up in the night thinking about it he would take deep breaths and concentrate on going back to sleep.
"Thats great Ty you are doing an amazing job of pushing your comfort zones and fears...what about you Troye? How did you hold up" Dan asked
"I felt a little panicked when we watched the parade because I was surrounded and felt like a couldn't get out. But Tyler talked me down" Troye said squeezing Tyler's hand
"Well thats great, sounds like you guys had fun and made some great progress" Dan said
"Wait..." Tyler said clearing his throat. Dan stopped turning the page and looked back up at the nervous boy
"When you...like...um when Troye had his panic attack we left the crowd and I was able to calm him down because we were alone but it was also so hot and he said he was hot and it was making him like...I don't know panic more or something. So I told him to take it off and he like panicked and jumped away from me freaking out over the idea of taking it off. I was genuinely concerned because it was so hot, but he wouldn't take it off"
Troye sat quietly, suddenly very self aware of the fact that even today, when it was 87 and sunny, he was wearing a long sleeve jumper. He self consciously pulled the sleeves down further to cover his hands, wishing that he could disappear in general. He didn't want to be here today to begin with and now he really didn't want to.
