Connie had yet another reason to be angry at Elle. She had left a very sick patient who was tacicardic and had a deep wound on his right leg for over 20 minutes on his own. Connie and Robyn stabled the patient after half an hour and now Connie was ready to find Elle.
She pushed open the doors forcefully, thinking of exactly the right words to say. Connie knew where Elle would be... Having a cigarette outside most likely. Dr. Gardner was stood against the wall outside, deep in thought with a cigarette in-between her two fingers.
Connie spotted her straight away. "One thing that hasn't changed in the ten years you've-"
"Shaun did not mention his symptoms-"
"Do your job!"
"I did! I'm on your side." Elle was desperate for Connie to understand.
"Meaning what?!" She snapped
"I know what's best for the department."
"You've been here five minutes and you know what's best?"
"Connie-"
"No, life and death. They are the only two things we are concerned about." Connie glared at her for a couple more seconds before turning away back into the hospital.
"Please Charlie don't make me do this." Rita looked up at Charlie with pleading eyes.
"I'm sorry, I've made a promise and keeping promises is one of the most important things in my life."
"Then you give me no choice, I'm gonna have to ask you to go on duty."
Charlie walked through reception with his coat on ready to leave. Rita and Connie followed closely behind him. Louise came up to them followed by Big Mac and soon everyone was asking questions as to what was going on.
"I don't want to say this but Sister Freeman had been given no option other than to put senior staff nurse Fairhead on immediate special leave." Connie announced finally.
"What why? " Jacob had noticed the crowd and went to find out what was going on.
"I can't give out anymore details." Said Connie.
"Look I just want to leave as quickly as possible." Charlie quickened his pace out of the doors and into the rain of Holby.
"Connie I'm gonna need more information than this what's going on?" Jacob asked, confused.
"You really want to know? Well your little friend decided to have a witch hunt against Charlie. That's why we're in this situation." Connie snarled at Elle and Jacob was just completely shocked at the news, this was not the Elle he knew.
1 hour later
Jacob was talking to Noel about what had happened with Charlie. He was dressed in his own clothes and ready to go home when somebody he really didn't want to talk to approached him.
Elle walked up to him and patted his arm "Urgh I could really use a drink." Her smile soon faded when Jacob scowled at her.
"Are you serious?"
"Oh not you too Jacob."
"That Ship-quiz you chucked the wrong person off, and I thought I knew you." He said shaking his head.
"You have..." She stepped back and spoke up so that everyone else could hear. "You have no idea what I have done for this department. It could've been a lot worse." Ellie walked away feeling defeated.
Jacob walked into Connie's office feeling guilty. He could've stopped Charlie from getting suspended if only he'd really thought about the true meaning of what Elle was saying. He'd walked in without knocking. "Er excuse me." Connie looked up and realised that it was him.
"I'm sorry, for everything. I could've stopped Charlie from getting suspended. If only... I just can't believe she would do something like that. I mean that's trying to get into Henrik's good books a bit too hard right?"
"Jacob it's not your fault. Anyway I'm going to fight to get Charlie back as soon as possible. Don't worry ok." She looked deep into his eyes wanting to just hug him close and tell him how it was never his fault and how she still cares for him. But the moment was lost when she realised the consequences of doing so. If she gets too close to him again than she runs the risk of losing Grace for good.
Jacob noticed the amount of paperwork on her desk, "your not doing all of that tonight are you?"
"Oh well it has to be done." She smiled.
"Well don't be here too late will you. We can't have a tired Connie Beauchamp on our hands now can we."
"Don't worry Jacob. People with 'sweet cheeks' never get tired"
He laughed as he approached the door. "I'll see you tomorrow." Just as he was about to go Connie stopped him, "Oh Jacob I just remembered that I was going to go to a conference with Charlie tomorrow, but now that he's y'know I was wondering if you'd like to come. I mean you don't have to I'd just like the company I guess." She was nervous for his reply.
"Yeah of course. It will be good to get away from this place for a bit. Thanks for asking." He gave Connie a genuine smile as he headed for the door. Jacob strolled out of the ED with a spring in his step knowing that he'll be spending all day tomorrow with the girl he loved. Maybe there was still hope for things to work out.
