It was about 8pm when he noticed the dark grey gas. Jacob sat in the pub opposite the hospital drinking his 3rd pint of the evening. He looked up out of the window to see smoke coming from the hospital... "What the" Jacob immediately got up and headed outside to find out what was going on.
1 hour earlier
Connie left the V.I.P patient in the hands of Cal, she needed some air. The man was persistently rude and ungrateful and Connie simply couldn't take anymore. She walked to her office and sat down behind the desk. All she had been doing was thinking about Jacob since he left. Was he ok? Did he hate her? She had no idea how they were going to fix this.
Outside of her office, Connie noticed people moving quickly and even running. She walked out to see what was going on.
As soon as she opened the door, the smell of burning sucked into her lungs. She saw Cal bleeding and covered in burns. "Mrs. Beauchamp, we need to get everyone out. The prisoner found a lighter and set fire to a highly flammable gas. I managed to get out in time, but the patient's definitely dead." Said Cal coughing in between every other word.
"Ok, Cal you need to get out of here. Your far too injured."
"No, I can't leave without knowing everyone else is safe."
"Well that's very heroic of you Cal, but right now you need to do the sensible thing and get out." Connie insisted.
"Connie, think about Jacob, the little family your going to start together. Please don't do this." Cal was thinking about what his mate, Jacob would do if he found out that he let her go and help people in the fire. The smell of smoke was getting stronger by the second and they had to move fast.
"Fine, you can stay. Just be careful." Cal nodded and they both started to help patients and people get out of the hospital.
Jacob ran up to Ethan who was standing outside of the Hospital, treating critical patients. "Ethan! What's happened? Where's Connie?" A flush of panic flooded through his mind.
"Err... I don't know, sorry." Ethan was far too busy treating the patient to help him. Without a moments hesitation, Jacob pushed open the doors to the hospital and ran inside. A mist of smoke floated around him and Jacob breathed into his t-shirt to avoid too much inhalation. He could hear coughing and screaming all around him, but couldn't make out a clear image of anyone.
"Connie!" Jacob shouted as loud as possible. He covered his face when he pushed through a set of doors where flames were visible in resus. "Help! Help!" The sound of a boy's voice came from the corner. Jacob followed the sound and found a little boy covering his face, screaming. "It's ok, I'm gonna get you out of here." Jacob picked up the boy and held him over his muscular shoulder. He decided to run out of the hospital picking up two other kids and getting them to safety.
Jacob put the kids down outside and noticed that the fire brigade had arrived. He looked around for Connie... Nothing. Jacob turned around to head back into the flames, "Leave it to us now mate." A fireman put his hand on Jacob's shoulder to turn him around. Without even trying to argue with the guy, Jacob sprinted back into the hospital pulling himself out of the man's grasp.
Outside of the hospital, Connie and Cal were receiving oxygen from the fire engine. Connie insisted she was fine. She kept ringing Jacob's mobile, but there was never any answer. Jacob hadn't seen her, because the fire engine was blocking his view of where she was standing. A few metres away, Connie overheard a firefighter telling a colleague that a man had just run into the flames. She knew straight away... Jacob had gone in to look for her.
No. She couldn't lose him and she wasn't going to either. "Excuse me." Connie approached the fireman. "Was the man who ran into the hospital about 6'3 with dark skin?"
"Yes madam, but men are in there looking for him now." He said trying to reassure her.
"No you don't understand. He thinks that I'm still in there and he's not going to stop looking until he knows I'm safe." A tear trickled down her cheek which she wiped rather quickly, trying to stay strong. The fireman radioed something into his walki-talki. "Ok, we'll get him out soon enough." The man walked away and into the burning building.
Jacob was beginning to feel dizzy from all of the smoke, as he walked into another room still looking for Connie. The building was starting to fall down and if Jacob didn't get out quickly then he would be burnt alive soon enough. "Connie!" Jacob shouted for the hundredth time. He didn't even know where he was anymore, he could've been on the other side of the hospital for all he knew.
A couple of firefighters were looking for him and heard Jacob shout Connie's name. One of them spotted a figure a few metres in front, "hey!" He shouted. "It's alright mate. She's safe, Connie's outside waiting for you." Jacob turned around and felt a rush of relief. The two firefighters moved closer to Jacob before he collapsed. "Come on mate, we need to get out of here, fast." He urged, taking hold of Jacob's arm and half pulling him towards the exit. Jacob couldn't find any breath left to talk, so he just walked with them as quickly as he could. The trio walked out of the room just as the ceiling was on the verge of falling down. Jacob could barely move from a lack of energy and oxygen, but the only thing that kept him going was the thought of his beautiful love, alive and well.
Jacob breathed a breath of fresh air, as they walked out of the hospital and away from the flames. He repeatedly coughed and coughed, searching for Connie. "Jacob!" Connie ran up to him with tears streaming down her cheeks. He enveloped her into a tight hug, not wanting to ever let her go again. "I'm so sorry Connie. I love you so much and I'm never leaving you like that again." Connie reached up and kissed him on the lips. "I'm sorry too, and I love you more then anything. Are you ok?." She checked him over briefly and was pleased to only find a couple of minor burns and soot. They kissed again until Jacob had to come up for air. "Oh I'm so sorry J, are you alright? Please don't ever do that to me again J, your too good to lose." She totally forgot about the condition he was in.
"Don't worry, kissing you is much nicer then breathing." Connie bit her lip and let him kiss her again. Looks like they were back on track, with the baby just 1 month away.
