"I thought you weren't coming in today?" Ellie asked Connie as she walked straight past her.
"Don't look too disappointed." Connie snarled walking into her office and pushing the door shut behind her. She had forgotten the letter which had the address and details of the conference that Jacob and her were going to today. Connie swiped up the sheet off of her desk and headed back out of her office.
As she was walking out of the ED her phone started to ring. She looked down to see Jacob's name on the screen, she smiled to herself and picked up the phone. "Hello, Jacob have you left yet?"
"No Connie I'm really sorry, but my car won't start and if I get the train I'll never make it."
"Well, I can take you if you want." Connie bit her lip waiting for the reply, she was now sitting in her sports car.
"Really?"
"Yeah of course it's no problem."
"Yeah ok thanks... Erm see you then."
"Ok bye."
Connie arrived at Jacob's doorstep after 20minutes and was running late for the conference. She was nervous about the journey being awkward, but nevertheless she hit the horn signalling for Jacob that she was outside.
Jacob jogged out into the rain in a white shirt, black tie, black blazer, fitted black trousers and Hugo Boss leather shoes. Connie watched on admiring his physique and dress sense. He opened the door and sat down in the passenger seat. "Wow you look... Incredible." Jacob gazed at her body in a tight black dress that stopped just above the knee. She blushed at his comment, "you don't look too bad yourself." They smiled at each other for a few seconds before Connie started the engine.
"I didn't tell you yesterday, but the NHS want a staff nurse to make a speech on what they think about the ED and life as an emergency nurse."
"So?" Jacob pondered with his arm resting on the window.
"I was kind of wondering if you could do it." She glanced at him with an awkward smile.
"Okay. How could I ever say no to that face huh?" He sighed.
"Works every time" she winked at him.
They soon arrived at the hotel where the conference was taking place. It had beautiful grounds with Rapids and waterfalls. They checked into the hotel and put their bags in their own separate rooms down the hall. Jacob met Connie back at reception where they both made their way to the conference hall.
"Welcome everyone to the NHS conference here in Cardiff. We're going to start off with a talk from a Staff Nurse who works in Holby ED." Henrik moved away from the microphone and sat back in his seat.
Jacob took a deep breath and Connie touched his thigh briefly to calm his nerves. He stood up and made his way to the microphone.
"Hi erm I'm Jacob Masters and I work in one of the most busiest Emergency Departments in the country. I love my job. There's always a new face, a new story and injury to deal with. I'm so grateful that I was given the job, because I don't have a clue what I'd be doing without it. I'm really happy in my job and I don't really know what else to say really." He looked at Connie who was smiling at him and then he knew exactly what to say. "Actually scrap everything I just said, because it's not true, not really. Being a nurse is one of the toughest jobs and everyday is a battle, a battle for a life and a battle for love. Whether that's trying to bring families back together or trying to fight for the woman of your dreams, that's always there working beside you or even bossing you about. But you can't have that woman, because she can't be with you, so you keep fighting for her everyday just like you keep fighting for a patient, because every good nurse fights for a patient and that's exactly what I'll keep doing until the day I die."
The crowd erupted into a round of applause. Connie was clapping but wasn't looking right at Jacob. He felt like such a dick. He'd just made the whole conference between him and Connie so awkward. Why did he have to involve Connie in the speech? Without thinking he walked straight out of the room not glancing at all at Connie.
It wasn't raining that much anymore so he decided to get some fresh air. Connie couldn't leave this awkwardness between them, so she got up and headed for the exit. Jacob was nowhere to be seen, until she saw him sitting at a bench by a lake. He hung his head down low leaning his elbows on his knees.
Connie walked up to him cautiously not knowing how to break the tension. She started off with a simple "hey".
"Hey. I've never heard you say that before." Still too embarrassed to look at her.
"What you've never heard me say hey to someone before?" She laughed .
"It just seems too informal that's all." He turned his head to the side and looked into her eyes. "I'm sorry." He said seriously.
"You have nothing to be sorry for." She moved her hand over his rubbing her thumb against his skin.
"I shouldn't have said all of that nonsense."
"So that's all it was then. You didn't mean it?"
"Of course I meant it, but what's the point in putting you through this every five minutes just because I can't let you go."
"But what if-" Connie was cut off by the sound of a child screaming down the Rapids.
Jacob had already started jogging towards the sound. He came to a sudden halt, almost falling down a mini waterfall, he put his arm out to stop Connie from making the same mistake. The screaming kept coming on and off like somebody was drowning. The pair frantically searched the rapids until they spotted a head bopping up and down about 10 metres downstream.
Jacob pulled off his blazer and tie and threw them on the floor. "What on earth do you think your doing Jacob?" Connie shouted at him trying to make him see sense. But Jacob's mind was made up five minutes ago.
"You know that if I don't go in now then that kid is going to die. I'm sorry." He grabbed Connie by the waist and kissed her passionately on the mouth. She was shocked at first, but then realised how much she missed him and pulled him in tighter towards her.
Jacob pulled away from her.
"Please Jacob don't do this." She was talking more quietly now trying to knock some sense into him. Without hesitation Jacob jumped off of the edge, which was about 8 metres above sea level, and bombed into the water.
Immediately he started swimming front crawl towards the boy. He hadn't anticipated for the current to be this strong. Suddenly, the current pulled him to the left causing him to smash against a boulder. Luckily, he didn't hit his head and managed to continue his way towards the drowning kid. The current pushed the boy closer to Jacob where he managed to lift the boy so that his head was out of the water.
Connie was now by the side of the Rapids, waiting for the emergency services.
Jacob had reached the side of the bank and was clinging onto a boulder for dear life. He mustard enough strength to lift the boy up the bank, hoping that Connie would be able to take him. "Con! Con! Can you reach him?" He panted trying to stay above the water himself as well as the boy. Connie got on her knees so that she could reach further into the bank. The boy grabbed onto her hand and Connie immediately pulled him up.
The boy must've been about 5 so wasn't that heavy.
She whipped off her smart blue coat and wrapped it around the boy. After checking him over briefly she told him to sit on a bench and look out for flashing lights. The boy liked the sound of the game and played it immediately.
"Jacob! Jacob! Are you ok?" Jacob was looking like letting go at any minute now as fatigue was becoming a problem. "Stay with me ok? I'm not loosing you anytime soon."
"Connie I need... I need to tell you something. If I don't make it... I-" another strong current pulled him further downstream. Jacob was trying to grab onto something, but hope was lost. He knew he was going to die.
