Connie sat on the sofa breast-feeding Joey, who was now one week old. Jacob had hoovered the entire house and cleaned everywhere, with the help of Grace of course. It was a special occasion, as Jacob's parents were driving up from Cornwall to see Joey and Jacob's girlfriend. Connie was nervous. What if they didn't like her? A thousand questions swam around in her head.
"You alright sweet cheeks?" She hadn't even noticed that Jacob was standing in the doorway.
"Yeah I'm fine, you?" She lied as Jacob took a seat next to her.
"Never better." Joey pulled away from Connie's breast, feeling full up and wanting a much needed sleep. His skin had turned a little darker over the past week and he was looking a bit more like Jacob everyday. "They'll probably be hear in about 10 minutes. I haven't seen my folks in 5 years." Connie looked at Jacob, he was so happy.
"You better take Joey then, so that I can do my hair." Connie kissed his cheek when she passed the baby into his arms. Joey curled up into his father's chest and fell asleep.
"You look beautiful enough the way you are." Connie's hair was in a loose messy bun and as much as Jacob tells her, she did not feel beautiful.
"Yeah right... I'll be back in a sec." She smirked turning away and walking up the stairs. Once Connie was out of Jacob's sight, he turned his attention to his beautiful son lying in his arms. "Y'know Joey, your mummy is the most beautiful woman in the world and she's going to teach you all of the smart stuff like science and how to be loving and kind. And I'll teach you how to ride a bike and one day how to get girls, but I just want you to know that wherever you go in life or whatever you do i will always love you... No matter what." He placed a kiss on Joey's beautiful forehead.
"How do I look?" Connie posed with one hand on her hip, she wore a white shirt with slim black trousers and her hair fell in perfect brown curls at the bottom. Jacob's jaw dropped, admiring her incredible body and gorgeous looks.
"Incredible." He stood up, still holding his baby son and walked up to her. Their lips connected with one another once they were close enough. "I love you" Connie pulled away from him, looking deep into his eyes.
"I love you more than words can describe and I want to spend the rest of my life with you." Jacob kissed her again until the doorbell rang. Connie sighed, not wanting to leave his touch,
Jacob took her hand, both walking to the front door together. She opened the door with a big smile on her face.
"Hello! You must be Connie." Martha spoke with a heavy Jamaican accent, as she and her husband stepped inside.
"Yes it's lovely to meet-"
"Jacob! Ma boi! Oh I've missed you so much." Martha and Sadio forgot to greet Connie properly and went straight to Jacob and the baby. Jacob's mother kissed his cheek and his father shook Jacob's free hand. Martha looked down at the sleeping baby lying in her son's arms. "Oh he is beautiful. Shame about the name though." Connie raised her eyebrows at Martha's rude remark. She was even more pissed off that Jacob didn't say anything... It was like he was scared of his own parents. "Anyway, shall we go and sit down, dinner will be ready soon." Connie gestured to the living room, already disliking his mother.
They all sat down in the lounge chatting about the usual stuff, until the questioning began. It was like Connie was a teenager being questioned by her boyfriends parents to make sure she was good enough for their perfect son. "So Jacob tells me your a doctor. I personally think that our doctors do nothing these days." Martha laughed, taking a sip of her wine. "Actually mum, Connie works harder than anyone in that hospital, she's really amazing." Jacob smiled at the love of his life and she smiled back, grateful that he was taking his side on this one. "So have you cooked the dinner tonight? What is it again?" Sadio asked the question this time.
"It's a chicken casserole and no Jacob did. He's more inventive when it comes to cooking I guess. Now if you'll excuse me I need to check on it." Connie tried to find any excuse to leave question time.
"Well if Jacob cooked it then how will you know if it's cooked?" Martha tilted her head to the side to look more sophisticated.
"I'm sure I'll cope." Connie smirked sarcastically, walking out of the room.
Urgh. What a bitch of a woman, Connie thought. She stirred some sort of chicken thing that Jacob had made, not really knowing what to do. This was going to be a long evening.
"Mum, Dad, what the hell is going on? Do you know how nervous she was about meeting you, I mean are you trying to make her hate you?" Jacob stood up shaking his head and handing Joey to Martha. He walked out into the kitchen to see if Connie was ok.
"Hey babe, sorry about that. I don't know what's wrong with them." Jacob wrapped his arms around Connie's waist from behind, as she continued to stir the sauce.
"Am I not good enough for them or something?" She kept her eyes on the chicken.
"No, no it's not that... Ok I'll tell you what it is, I think my mum's jealous of how great you are. I mean your one of the best doctors in the country and she was just a farmer in Jamaica until she moved here. What are you doing with that chicken?" He laughed, trying to change the subject.
"Trying to become a better chef then you, oh hold on that's impossible." Connie turned round.
"Aw don't listen to anything she says babe." He kissed her softly, giving her butterflies in the pit of her stomach. "And I think all of that stirring has made it cook quicker. Grace! Mum, Dad! Dinner!" Jacob called for everyone to come and sit at the already laid table.
Grace ran downstairs, starving. They all took their seats. "You must be Jacob's mum and dad. Nice to meet you." Connie smiled at her daughter's politeness.
"Oh and you must be Grace, are you as amazing as your mother?" Asked Martha. Connie rolled her eyes, picking up her fawk and stabbing the chicken. Grace didn't really know how to respond to this and just shrugged, a little confused.
"So what time are you leaving?" Asked Connie. The sooner the better, she thought.
"Probably about 10, Sadio and I have business in the bedroom to be doing." The parents looked at each other from across the table, everyone else cringed. "This is delicious Jacob boi, so proud of you." Said Martha. Jacob's cheeks turned slightly red and Connie smirked at his embarrassment, trying to hold back a laugh.
"Thanks mum." He said rather quickly.
All in all, the night turned out to be a success and Jacob's parents took more of liking to Connie as they got to know her better. In the end they didn't see her as the snobby know-it-all, rich doctor, but just as Connie Beauchamp.
