Jacob opened the front door to let the child minder inside. "Hello Yasmin, come in." Yasmin stepped inside, wiping her feet on the mat.
"Oh Jacob, I haven't seen you in a while, how's the err... Y'know." The conversation was awkward and Jacob looked forward to getting out of there.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Nothing gets me down. Anyway, Joey's in the living room. I've really got to go and catch the bus, but your taking him to the nursery soon right?"
"Yep, thanks Jacob you better get going." She smiled softly.
"Alright, thanks again. Everything's in his baby bag. I'll pick him up after my shift." Jacob opened the door and walked out into the rain.
He pulled the hood of his jacket over his head and walked to he nearest bus stop as quickly as possible.
Connie ordered several staff around, whilst treating the patient in resus. "Ok I want regular obs, blood gases and a CT scan please. Mr. Terry, can you remember what happened." She leant over the elderly man on the bed.
"No, I can't remember anything, I just past out." The man tried to shake his head, but the neck brace restricted him.
"Alright, well don't worry about it, I'm sure it's all going to be fine." Robyn reassured.
Connie's phone buzzed in her pocket, she sighed before pulling it out. "Dr. Knight could you take over here, I've got a meeting to get to. Hanssen wont leave me alone." She had already left resus before Cal could turn his head.
"Looks like I'm taking over then." Cal moved over to the patient with a sigh.
He hated buses. The constant stench of farts, burps and nappies travelled through his nose with every breath. Jacob was grateful that the next stop was Holby ED and would only have to put up with being cramped for a little longer.
The wound pulsed as the stinging pain returned to his side, the pain killers must've worn off. Jacob automatically moved a hand to the wound, but tried to take his mind off the pain.
"Final stop, Holby ED." Jacob shuffled past a load of people to get out of the bus door. Fresh air filled his lungs and Jacob walked towards the hospital with a smile on his face.
Connie opened the door to the board room with a hurry. A round table filled the room with important people sitting around it. Hanssen was the first to comment on Connie's lateness, "Decided to turn up Mrs. Beauchamp?" He arched an eyebrow, keeping his back perfectly straight on the leather chair.
"Well, saving patients lives comes first I'm afraid." She sat down, preparing herself for a rather boring half-hour.
Elle had to look twice when she walked past Jacob by reception. "Jacob?" His head turned round at the sound of his name. A smile spread across his face, his best friend stood in front of him, looking confused.
"Ell!" He put a friendly arm around Dr. Gardner.
"What are you doing here? We weren't expecting you back for another couple of weeks." She frowned, as more and more colleges noticed Jacob in the hospital.
"Yeah I know, but I was bored at home and I feel fine, so I thought I should spend my time saving lives instead of resting." Elle knew that Connie wouldn't have allowed this in a million years.
"And Connie's going to let you work after just coming back home? No, I'm sorry Jacob, but I can't let you work today. You do understand that we almost lost you a few weeks back." Jacob frowned, he thought that at least Elle would be supporting him on this one. "Look, just play a bit of FIFA and enjoy the time off... I know I certainly would." With that Elle walked away to treat some patients.
Jacob shook his head. Why can't anyone let him work. He hadn't taken a horrible bus journey for nothing. Jacob wasn't taking no for an answer, walking off to get changed in the staff room.
"I think we're done here. Thank you everyone for your time." Everyone stood up around the table and Connie moved swiftly out of the room. "What a waste of my time." She muttered to herself, heading back in the direction of the ED.
Robyn entered the staff room to find Jacob wearing his famous white uniform and ready to work. "Morning Robyn." He smiled, ignoring the pain in his side from putting on his uniform.
"Jacob, it's great to see you back so early. Just shows how strong you are, you won't let anything get in your way." She grabbed a mug from the cupboard and began to make a coffee.
"Thanks Freckles, not everyone thinks the same though." He sighed, leaning over the counter.
"What do you mean?" She frowned.
"Well, I take a horrible bus journey to get here and everyone keeps telling me to go back home.... To rest. I mean isn't lying in a hospital bed for two weeks enough?" Robyn pinched the bridge of her nose for a moment.
"Hang on, so your not actually supposed to be here?"
"Well, kinda. Hey, you couldn't do me a favour could you?"
"Depends..." Jacob sighed, beginning to walk out of the staffroom.
"Wait, ok what is it?" He smiled down at her.
"Ok, so I want to do some work, but if Connie sees me I'm dead..."
"So..."
"So, I need you to just watch my back for a few hours. For instance, if I'm treating a patient in cubicles and you see Connie about to come in, just distract her until I leave." Robyn raised her eyebrows.
"Are you serious? If Mrs. Beauchamp finds out about this then she'll kill me as well as you."
"Nope, because if I get caught, I promise that I'll say you had nothing to do with it." Robyn thought about this for a moment, Jacob had helped her out in the past. "Pretty please..." He put his puppy dog eyes on, which were impossible to say no to. Robyn rolled her eyes at him.
"Fine. On one condition, you put a good word in with the boss for me." She held out a hand for him to shake.
"Deal." Jacob shook her hand, before they both left to do some work.
