The next few days were a blur. Packing, loading, and more packing. I kept myself busy by labeling boxes and organizing them neatly so that unpacking wouldn't be too difficult once I moved out completely. Ashley hadn't tried to contact me after what happened in the park. I didn't expect her to.
I felt guilty for it all. For not pulling away from her when she kissed me. For hurting her. For fucking everything up.
Dane was supposed to come over soon to help me load up my car and a little trailer my mom rented for me to help move my stuff. It was big enough for me and Dane's stuff, so we planned on carpooling with my mom and Lynn. My dad didn't care enough to be there or help with me moving out, but I couldn't care less.
I looked around at my practically empty room. The walls were all bare. All the furniture had been taken out already and loaded. All that was left were my boxes.
I heard the front door open and I ran down the steps to greet Dane who was holding several bags. "Hey Lex!" he exclaimed, dropping his possessions so I could hug him. He picked me up and spun me around before setting me back down again. "So, Lynn will be over in a bit. She's just taking care of some stuff right now. I have my shit in my trunk."
My mom cleared her throat and Dane looked over to her, his face turning red. "Uh, sorry Mrs. Elliot," he apologized, his eyes flicking over to me. I just shook my head at him and laughed, pulling him along. "Come on, let's get your stuff into the trailer! Then we can do mine. I'm pretty much finished already."
Dane agreed and I watched as he unlocked the trunk of his car, revealing the pile of boxes almost spilling out. "I only brought my desk and chair for furniture," he told me, shrugging as he pulled out a box and I unlocked the trailer for him so he could get inside. I rolled out the ramp before strolling back to his car, grabbing another box.

It took us a while to sort everything properly and make sure there was enough space for me. My hair was damp in some areas from sweating in the hot sun, my hair clinging to my forehead. I wiped the sweat from my brow and sat down on the ramp, catching my breath.
My mom made her way out of the house with a couple of cool bottles of water for us. "Oh thank god," I said, reaching for one. I took off the cap and chugged almost the entire bottle. I heard a car approach and glanced up to see Lynn pulling up, her windows rolled down. She was wearing black sunglasses, her hair in a ponytail.
"Hey!" she exclaimed, pulling her small body out of the big car, practically hopping over to us. She knelt down and gave me a quick kiss before standing back up, looking in the trailer. "Are you guys almost done? What should I do?" she wondered, looking over at my mom. "That was just Dane's stuff. Now we have all of mine to load before we're finished," I told her, taking another swig of water. She nodded, looking determined. "Okay. Should we get started now?"
Dane groaned beside me, laying back on the ramp. I giggled at the sight of him, patting his shoulder. "Come on, bud. You can do it," I assured him, helping him back up.
The both of them followed me upstairs into my room and I watched as Lynn stared solemnly at my blank walls. She sighed before running her hand along the wall where my posters and art used to hang.
"Hey, do you want this?" she asked, lifting up a picture. I glanced over at it. It was a picture of Jenna and I, junior year. We were giving each other piggy back rides. I smiled to myself. Jenna and I had barely talked these past couple of months. I knew she was moving in with Tyler, and I was pretty sure she was moving to Ohio. I nodded and took the picture from her, folding it and putting it in my pocket.
She smiled at me and I gazed into her eyes, admiring those galaxies hidden inside of her.
"I'll be right back, I'm gonna take these things down," Dane announced, gesturing to a couple of boxes. I nodded and turned back to Lynn after he left, bounding down the stairs. "So...what are you going to do?" I asked her, drawing her attention toward me.
She just shrugged, her hands in her back pockets. "I've been working on more music with the guys. But besides that, I'm going to the community college here and working at a coffee shop until I find something better to do. That's about it," she replied, shrugging as if it wasn't a big deal. I just nodded, giving her a small smile.
"I'm gonna visit you though, obviously. We can go out to lunch and the beach or something. You can show me all around," she reminded me, kissing my cheek. I nodded and turned away, picking up a box, heading to the front yard to start loading all my stuff.

By the end of it all, I was completely exhausted and it was only noon. My mom had made us all a lot of food, so we sat outside on the front steps and ate, talking about what Dane and I would first do when we got to RISD. I tried not to cry. It was hard leaving this all behind and starting my life for real. It was something I never though I would ever be capable of.
I ate quietly, listening to the conversation as I glanced up at the clear blue sky.
By the time we all finished lunch, I knew it was time to go. I sighed, cleaning my dishes in the kitchen sink. I walked upstairs slowly into my old room, looking at it one more time. I blinked the tears from my eyes and let a few of them escape before wiping them away. I cleared my throat before walking back outside. "You ready?" Lynn wondered, raising her eyebrows. I nodded, heading to the driver's seat.
"Alex, I can drive. Don't worry about it," she assured me, touching my arm. I just nodded and handed her the keys, hopping into the backseat with Lynn while Dane sat in front.
"Here we go!" Dane exclaimed, clapping his hands.
Yeah, here we go.
