Violet's POV
.
.
The next morning was a lovely morning. Why not, after all it was Sunday. I woke up at ten o'clock and did my morning routine. Then I got changed into a printed draped tank top and my blue denim jeans with rips on the knees and thighs. I put on my sandals and went downstairs.
It was all too quiet in the house. Looks like mom and dad are out.
I went to the kitchen to have breakfast. Taking a bowl from the cabinet, I poured Cheerios in it and padded to the refrigerator to get the milk. To my surprise, there was a note on it which read, "Morning, Violet. Sorry, we had to leave before you wake up, but we were in a hurry. Your Aunt Kayla wasn't feeling well, so we needed to visit her. Call me when you wake up. Love, mom!"
I frowned, what happened? I really don't like that woman at all, nor had I wanted to visit her. So I was glad that mom left without me, but now I was alone. I don't know why but I just didn't like her. There was something about her that made me dislike her ever since I was a kid and she wasn't exactly friendly to me. She used to be somewhat bitter, holding on to a grudge. Now years later, I couldn't bring myself to endure her presence.
Kayla Steele was a 38 year old woman who refused to get married for reasons I didn't know. She lived in Brooklyn all alone in a single storey house. Other than this, I didn't know much about her. In my opinion, she was crazy.
Shaking my head, I grabbed the milk and poured it over my cereal. I ate it silently, thinking about last night. The strange events of last night were starting to give me a headache.
I placed my bowl in the sink and made myself a cup of coffee. I went to sit on the front porch to clear my head. Looking at the clear blue sky, I sipped my coffee. It was a beautiful morning with a clear sky, bright sunlight which warmed my skin, birds that were chirping happily, cool breeze and the greenery of this neighbourhood. I sighed in contentment as I continued to drink my coffee.
After finishing my coffee, I fished out my iPhone from my jeans pocket and dialled mom's number. She answered on the third ring, "Hello?"
"Mom, it's me, Violet. What happened?" I asked her.
"Oh, hi, Violet. Have you eaten? Are you okay?" she asked worriedly.
I smiled, "Yes, mom, I have eaten and I'm fine with being home alone."
"That's good. I knew that you wouldn't have wanted to come along, so I didn't wake you up."
"Thanks for that. I really didn't want to visit her. Anyways what happened to her?" I asked again.
"Oh, yes. She wasn't feeling well, so she called your dad early in the morning. She told him that her cancer is back and it's much more worse than last time__" I cut her off.
"She had cancer?!" I echoed in disbelief.
"Yes, I didn't knew about it either. According to your father, she was declared cancer free twenty two years ago. But that treatment didn't go well with her, rendering her infertile. Thus, her refusal of marriage." She took a deep breath, "So when we got here, we found her unconscious on the living room couch and transported her to the hospital. We are still in the hospital."
A frown appeared on my face, "Why didn't she called 911? Surely they would have reached her earlier than you did."
"That's the thing, baby. She is afraid of hospitals after her long months of cancer treatment in the past. She was only sixteen at the time," she explained.
