Violet's POV

The moment I stepped into the school the next day, it hit me that Brad hadn't texted me like he said he would. But what was the point? Even if he did have texted me, I'd have been asleep.

Giving a small shrug, I walked to my locker and selected the books. Soon Kate and Michael joined me and I found myself laughing. They looked happy because apparently they were going on a date. I don't know how that could make someone so happy. Cue the eye roll.

The classes went by in a blur, but lunch was a strange event. So what happened was that we were all sitting peacefully eating our lunch, when Melissa entered. She looked strange, to say the least. I mean I've never seen her like this. She was wearing straight cut jeans and a blue lace top with full sleeves. She wasn't even wearing her usual dangerously high heels. But her makeup seemed to be flawless.

The whole cafeteria seemed to share my feelings, except Brad. It was dead silent and if you dropped a pin, it'd sound too loud. Everyone was looking at her.

She didn't, however, acknowledge anyone, didn't spare a glance to anyone. She quietly bought her lunch and walked to an empty table. Even her walk looked awkward and pained. She seated herself and kept her face down, eating slowly.

I couldn't look away. I was way too surprised. Her long blond hair was loose and was falling on her face from the left side. Her eyes, which usually looked bright blue, were now dull. Now that I looked closely, I realized that she was wearing a lot more makeup than she usually does. I was able to see all this because she was not far from me, only one table was between us.

Slowly, the sounds of the cafeteria resumed after the students realized that they won't get any drama today. But I was still staring at her, my mouth slightly open.

A minute or so later, she raised her head and made eye contact with me. It startled me to see defeat and pain in her eyes. I know that she was never good to me, but seeing her like this made me sad. She must have misinterpreted it as pity, because she broke eye contact and then never look up for the rest of the lunch.

I looked down too, thinking about what could've been wrong with her. I must have been staring at my lunch for too long, because the next thing I know was Kate tapping my shoulder. I looked up, startled, "Huh?"

"Are you alright? You've been like this for five minutes now," she inquired in a soft voice.

I nodded distractedly, "Yeah, I'm fine."

She didn't look convinced, but didn't ask any more questions and I am thankful for that.

I started eating to avoid any more inquisition, but my appetite was already lost. I kept thinking about what could be wrong with her. I just couldn't help it. I can't see anyone in pain. It was disturbing to see Melissa Collins like this.

My phone buzzed with a notification and successfully distracted me from my thoughts. I fished it out only to see that I had a new text from Brad. Involuntarily my eyes snapped to Brad, and found that he was already looking at me. He motioned to the phone and I looked down, opening the message.

Brad: skp nxt cls. Same plc

I didn't even thought about whether or not I had a class next, I just replied okay. What's wrong with me?

He didn't reply, but he didn't have to. He immediately left his seat and walked out of the cafeteria. No one paid any mind to him.

I waited till the end of the lunch and when the bell rang, I was quickly out of my seat. Not bothering to tell Kate and Michael anything, I picked up my bag and rushed out. I made a beeline to the back of the bleachers.
