Violet's POV

.

.

The booming voice, which no doubt belonged to some cop, froze everything. I stopped struggling. Ashton froze his advances. Even the snickers of Mark ceased from the outer room. Only one thing was audible; Brad's ragged breathing.

Slowly, without creating a single sound, Ashton got off of me and took a position in which he couldn't be shot with my battered body acting as a shield. He knew, along with everyone else in the outer room, that they were busted. There was no other choice.

But being a criminal isn't easy, is it? They will try to make sure that Brad and I don't survive if they couldn't. And if they did survive, they will kill us like worthless rats. Brad and I are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Whether they escape or not, they'll make sure we are dead.

It's a hopeless feeling to know that death awaits you this closely.

But with this hopelessness comes another feeling. Another feeling which is way stronger than despair. Once you know that you'll be dead one way or another, you become reckless, unafraid even.

That's what I felt in that moment. I felt like I wasn't in my body anymore, like I was an onlooker on this fiasco.

A sudden rush of adrenaline in my veins made my head pound and I felt dizzy, almost like floating. There was no pain in that moment. And before I realised what was happening, I heard a scream of help, loud, shrill and ear ringing.

By the way Ashton sucked in a sharp breath beside me, I realised that the screaming voice belonged to none other than the sweet little me.

With a speed that surprised me and an agility that made my whole body protest in pain, Ashton dragged me up and then outside. The cold glare Mark threw my way sent a chill down my spine. I realised that I was in fact right. He would do everything he could to make sure that Brad and I won't live through today.

I found myself standing in the middle of the outer room, facing Brad, his tormentors and the cops, while Ashton and everyone else was behind me. There were eight officers with their guards high and guns raised.

The man who looked to be in charge of the rescue operation spoke up again, loud and clear, "Drop your weapons and let the children go. This is your final warning."

Mark snorted, "Final warning? You can't shoot me because if you hadn't noticed, my men have perfect aim on these children."

I saw Brad's head snap up and his eyes widen as he eyed the situation. His gaze was locked somewhere to my left. Glancing that way, I found a burly man with a gun pointed directly towards my head. My breathing sped up and because of it, pain shot through my midsection.

It happened too fast for my dazed mind to register. One moment, Brad was held back by his two tormentors and the next, they were lying on the floor, with blood pouring out of their backs. I didn't even hear the report.

This action caused a fight to break out. But Mark's men outnumbered the cops by a long shot. Some cop pulled me out of the grip of Ashton. Ashton was panicking himself, after all he wasn't an experienced criminal like his father. Just as the cop was leading me out of the room, he was attacked by two men. I was pushed to the wall and I collapsed against it but somehow managed to stay on my feet.

I continued to breath roughly, as I watched the scene in front of me without actually seeing it. A presence beside me made me flinch. Having no energy to fight back or run away, I just turned my head to look at the intruder and beg for my life. It turned out to be Brad.
