I wasn’t ready at all for Liam to come, but I knew that he was coming whether I told him to or not.
I was currently in the middle of packing because I was being evicted in two days and I had given up hope on getting the money by the deadline. I had decided to just stay with Bri, but I really didn’t want to.
I moved to New York to be more independent and now I was going back to being dependent on someone and having them “take care of me”. I hated the feeling.
“Emily!” I heard the front door open and Bri walk in. Her voice sounded urgent and panicked.
“What is it?” I asked, putting down the box I was carrying and rushing out of my room to greet her at the front door.
“It’s Liam.” She said, out of breath and leaning on a chair.
“What happened to him?” I asked, preparing myself for the worst. But as I said it Bri’s face changed from panicked, to a happy cheerful girl.
“He’s downstairs.” She said and stood up, walking over to the now empty refrigerator and grabbing the last apple.
“Oh my god Bri, I’m already on edge, there is no need to worry me anymore!” I almost yelled, not taking her joke well at all.
“Sorry, I was just trying to lighten the mood.” She mumbled as I walked away from the kitchen and back into my room and started packing again.
A couple minutes later Bri opened the door to my room and walked inside.
“I really am sorry…” she said.
“It’s fine. I’m just…” I sighed deeply, “on edge lately.”
“I get it. And I hope it makes everything easier that I’ll be right next door to you if you need anything.” She smiled, taking the shirt I handed her and putting it in the box.
“No actually, that’s what is making me on edge. I’ve tried for so long to be independent and not need anyone, and now I’m becoming more and more needy every day!”
“Em, needing help is not a bad thing. For the past three years you have done everything on your own. I think you deserve a little help.” She calmed me down a little.
I guess she’s right. But it still made me feel uneasy.
“Hey, how about you take Maya downstairs to see Liam. I think he wanted to take you guys somewhere.” Bri said taking the box and moving it to the side of the bed she was standing on.
I knew better than to argue with her, so I slipped on my shoes and went out to the living room to get Maya, who was playing with her dolls.
“Come one Maya. Let’s go see Liam.” I smiled, and put her shoes on for her and headed out into the hallway.
The short ride down the elevator was just that; short. When the door opened I saw Liam sitting in the crowded “lobby” of the apartment building on his phone.
“Liam!” Maya squealed and ran to him. She had really taken a liking to him; to bad she didn’t know that she had taken a like to her father.
No, I had to stop thinking about that. Obviously one day someone would figure it out, but I’m just hoping that it’s later rather than sooner.
“Hey Em…” Liam said, walking up and hugging me. For a second it seemed like he was about to kiss me, but he didn’t, “I’m glad you got the message. I was about to come up and get you, but then you came down.”
“Yeah…” I said awkwardly, fixing the braid I had done in my hair. “So where are you taking us?”
“Well, whenever I’m in New York I never get to do anything tourist-y so I wanted you to show me around New York.” He smiled his smile where his eyes scrunch up and his face just lights up. It really does make you swoon.
“Uh, sure. Would you like to start toward Central Park, or Times Square, or Broadway?” I asked, starting to name places close to my apartment.
“Surprise me.” He says suddenly, and picks up Maya, leading me outside.
I started leading him toward Central Park, where we could just sit, and hopefully not get recognized.
Liam, being the sweetheart he is, put on a baseball cap and sunglasses; you really couldn’t tell it was him!
We walked right to the front of the park, and of course Maya recognized it.
“Zoo!” she yelled, pointing toward the gates of the Central Park Zoo. I sighed and looked to her, on Liam’s shoulders.
“WE can’t go to the zoo baby. Not right now.”
“Why not?” she asked, crossing her arms and pouting.
“Because we can’t right now.” I replied sternly. I really did want to go to the zoo, but I just didn’t have the money.
“I’m perfectly fine with going. I’ll go buy tickets.” Liam said suddenly. I really hated him paying for stuff for me, but I’m just glad he didn’t make me tell him that I couldn’t afford the zoo. I’m glad he just understood.
I nodded reluctantly and we walked over to the gates of the zoo.
Once inside, Maya ran off to her favorite exhibit: the seals. I struggled to keep up after her, but Liam held me back.
“It’s fine, she’s fine. Just stay here, walk with me.” He put his hand on my shoulder and instantly calmed me down.
I had never been this relaxed while out with Maya. She had so much energy that she would always run somewhere, or climb on something, and I would have to keep up with her.
Maybe not having Liam in my life wasn’t such a good idea. He seemed to always calm me, and put a certain ease to any situation we were in. It was refreshing having him around.
For the past hour we had been walking around, I hadn’t once worried about being evicted, or finding a job, I was just enjoying the time spent with Maya and Liam.
“You look very deep in thought. What are you thinking about?” Liam looked down at me.
“I’m so relaxed right now. It’s nice.” I say, leaning into his chest as we walked through the zoo.
It almost felt like we were a real family. But of course all of it had to be ruined…
