The whole trial I was just looking over at Maya. She looked so different, and it had only been a couple of days. I couldn't stand to think of what would happen to her if she were to get taken away from me.
"Em." Liam patted my thigh.
"Hmm?" I asked, looking away from Maya and to him.
"You were asked to the bench." He said and I looked up to see the whole court room looking at me, and the opposing lawyer standing above me. I gave him a weak smile and got up, smoothing out my skirt and walking over to the bench.
"Do you swear to tell the truth, and only the truth?" the bailiff asked as I raised my right hand.
"I do." I nodded and sat down.
"Ms. Clarke, have you ever done anything to Maya?" the lawyer came walking up to me.
"Like what?" I asked, completely out of it.
"Like, hit her." The lawyer said, giving me an evil smirk.
"I would never." I said, feeling a bit hurt that again, someone would believe I would hit my daughter.
"Is it true that you kept the fact that you had a daughter from her father?" he asked.
"Yes." I nodded and looked down at my hands, not daring to meet my eyes with Liam's.
"And why was that?" he asked.
"I... I wanted..." I started to say, but then I lost it, "I wanted Liam to be happy, and having a daughter would not make him happy at the time."
"Now Ms. Clarke, I'm going to ask you the question again, and I want you to answer truthfully, did you ever hit Maya?" the lawyer asked again, this time a little more aggressively.
"I never have and never will hit Maya." I finally gained the courage to look up at the ridiculous lawyer.
"Then why would someone put in a report of child abuse coming from your home?" he asked, and before I could answer he raised hi voice and yelled at me again, "Did you or did you not abuse your daughter?"
That's when I lost it.
"I don't know why someone would put in a false report, I don't know why there are bad people in the world. I might be a bad person, and I might've made mistakes but I have never, and I mean never hit my daughter. And I hope that when we are done here you will put just as much effort into finding out who put in that false report as you have here." I almost screamed.
"No more questions." The lawyer said, and walked back to his table and started whispering with the other lawyer he was with.
"Ms. Clarke, please stay on the bench." The judge said as I was standing up. I nodded and looked forward to see Collin walking toward me.
"Now, ladies and gentlemen of the jury," he said pointing to the jury, "I would like to explain to you why we are here one more time. We are here because someone put in a false report of my client abusing her daughter. And then child protective services took away her daughter with no further explanation other than: you have abused your daughter and the paparazzi are too much."
The jury looked at each other and nodded, then looked back to Collin.
"Now can I ask you this? Why would child protective services take away Maya when there are plenty of other celebrities with children who are surrounded by fame and paparazzi? There's Beyonce and her daughter, Kim Kardashian and her daughter, and so many more."
The whole courtroom went into uproar. Everyone talking about how everything he was saying is true. I looked over to Collin and gave him a thumbs up.
Collin continued with his statement, asking me a question here or there until finally it looked like the whole jury were agreeing with him.
He smiled and sat back down at the table next to Liam.
"Alright, jury, you may now deliberate and we will meet back here in two hours." The judge knocked on the table with his gavel twice, "Court dismissed."
"Wow Collin you did amazing!" I smiled and ran up to him, giving him a huge hug.
"That was amazing! Way better than mock trials at NYU." He smiled and walked away to go talk to some other people.
"See I told you everything would turn out ok." Liam came up to me and gave me a big hug.
"I know, I was just so worried, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm really positive we'll get her back." I smiled and looked up at Liam.
"So, after all of this, what do we do?" Liam said after a few moments of silence. I knew we had to talk about it, but I really wanted to avoid the question for as long as possible.
"Well, I guess you go back on tour and we stay here. Maybe after your tour we can talk about... us." I said shyly, not wanting to push anything onto him.
"Alright, I guess we just wait now." Liam said and turned to the side a little. We stood there awkwardly for a couple minutes but I couldn't handle it.
"How about we go to lunch?" I asked and Liam's eyes brightened as he turned to me.
"I would love to." He said and we walked out of the court house.
...
Almost two hours later we walked back into the courtroom and took our seats. The jury had finished deliberating and they were sitting back in their seats, looking at the judge.
"Court is now in session. May the jury please declare their decision?" the judge said loudly.
One man in a plaid shirt stood up with a piece of paper in his hand. He put on his glasses and started to read.
"We the jury have come to a decision in the case Clarke vs. government in favor of Clarke." The man said and I almost stood up and danced around, but I just smiled really big and looked to Liam, giving him a big hug, then over to Collin giving him a hug too.
"We have also come to the conclusion that the Child Protective Service Agency has unfairly judged Ms. Clarke and took away her daughter unfairly, so we also find, in favor of Ms. Clarke, one hundred thousand dollars from the agency." The man finished and gave the bailiff the paper he was reading from.
"We did it! We did it!" Collin looked to me and then to Liam as the judge was escorted from the court room.
"Wait, what?" I asked, still in shock.
"You get Maya back and Child Protective Services has to give you one hundred thousand dollars!" Collin said a little louder and I smiled, giving him a hug.
"Now let's go get Maya back." Liam said and took my hand in his.
We walked to the room where we would have to sign some papers, stating that we were in fact Maya's parents.
Once everything was signed the police officer took the papers and left the room.
"I'm so nervous." I said to Liam who was standing beside me.
"Don't be, it's just Maya." He smiled and intertwined his fingers with mine. As soon as he said it the door opened and in walked Maya, hobbling in her uncomfortable looking shoes.
"Mommy?" she asked as she walked closer to me.
"Yeah baby, it's me." I smiled, not even trying to hold the tears in.
Maya's face brightened and she started running the short distance from the door to us. Both Liam and I kneeled down and hugged her as she ran into our arms.
"It's ok bubbuh, mama's got you." I smiled and stroked her hair.
"I love you mama." She smiled and kissed me on the cheek.
