In the morning I woke up being poked in the arm. I opened my eyes and saw Maya standing beside me, teddy bear in hand. I looked over at the bed side table and saw the time. It was seven in the morning.
"Yes..." I whispered, remembering that Liam was only a foot away from me, maybe even less.
"I want breakfast." Maya smiled, not being able to pronounce "breakfast" just right.
"Ok, but we have to be quiet." I pointed a finger to Liam and she nodded, putting her finger to her lips.
I got out of bed slowly not to stir Liam, and made my way out to the kitchen. The fridge was stocked with food, so I took out some eggs and cheese and made two omelets.
Not too long later Liam padded across the carpeted floor toward where we were sitting at the dining table.
"Good morning." He smiled, taking a bottle of juice from the fridge, "I didn't hear you get up."
"Yeah, I didn't want to wake you." I smiled, looking back at Maya who was shoving food into her mouth incessantly.
We sat and ate our breakfasts talking every once in a while about our plans. But after we were all finished, Liam left to go to his interview, leaving me with Maya.
I tried to keep her entertained without taking her outside into the crazy world of paparazzi but I knew she wouldn't be entertained for long. I didn't bring many toys or movies, and how long can you keep a three year old occupied before she goes crazy?
So I got her dressed in a cute summer dress, threw a jacket onto myself, and headed down to the lobby of the hotel. In the elevator Maya pressed the button, as she always insisted on doing, and then went on to look at her wonky reflection in the obscured mirror in the elevator.
When the door opened and we stepped out, I could see the men outside move closer to the see-through glass doors of the hotel and start taking their damn pictures. I picked Maya up and walked to the door, putting both Maya's and my head down to keep from blinding me. I walked in the pattern of the asphalt on the ground until other people's feet weren't stepping on mine.
I looked up and saw that I had shaken off most of the men and I was almost around the corner from the hotel. There were still about seven or eight men following me but they kept their distance. And that's all I wanted.
After we were a couple streets away I put Maya down and held onto her hand tightly. I turned onto another street to see a row of cute little boutiques. I looked down at my purse which held my wallet. I had made some money, enough to buy some clothes, but I really wanted to save up for my own apartment. Even though it might take a while, I couldn't just think I could spend money frivolously whenever I wanted.
My attention was taken from my financial problems when I felt Maya pulling at my arm, pointing toward a police car that had just went past us in the opposite direction, the sirens blasting.
"Mama, look!" she smiled, jumping up and down pointing at the car that stopped right down the street. I could see there was a crowd gathered up there, and a lot of commotion. Not even a second later two more police cars drove up at high speed and a fire truck too.
"What happened mama?" Maya asked, stopping her jumping.
"I don't know..." I mumbled a barely audible response and pulled Maya after me toward the scene. I had to push my way past a big crowd of people but luckily I was small so I could fit through easily. But I wish I hadn't been able to fit easily. Because maybe if I wasn't let through I would give up and not have to see the sight in front of me.
"That's my dad!" I screamed, tears coming up. I don't know what caused this reaction, I had only yelled at him, hated him days before, but seeing you father lying on the ground spewing out blood makes you forget about all that.
