After eating all seven of the cookies we made, since Maya and Liam dropped most of the dough on the floor, we made our way to the living room and sat down for a movie night.
I quickly changed Maya and myself into pajamas and we joined Liam on the big couch in front of the flat screen TV. I put in the movie Dumbo, it being Maya's favorite movie, and we all laid back to watch the movie.
After about twenty minutes, Maya had moved off of the couch and forward to the TV, laughing at the funny elephant flying across the screen.
"So you're really leaving tomorrow?" I asked, moving closer to Liam to fill the space where Maya sat.
"Yeah, but the tour will be over soon and then I can come back." He looked over and smiled at me.
"But I can't expect you to just fly over here whenever you can. That would be so unfair of me to do that to you." I say, looking down and picking at the already chipped nail polish on my hand.
"I would do anything to be with you two." Liam smiled.
"I know, but you have other people in your life. You have your family back in England, the boys, and friends." I said.
"But I would rather be with you." He said, trying to convince me.
"I understand, but I can't do that to." I said.
"So what are you saying?" he asked, sitting up so that he could look straight at me.
"I'm saying that maybe..." I took a big sigh, "maybe we should stop this. At least until I finish at NYU next year. Then maybe I could move back to England."
"No, Em please, I already missed out on three years, I can't miss any more. I want to do this, I will fly here whenever I can to be with you. Don't even worry about me. Just have an open door for me and I'll be here." Liam pleaded, grabbing my hand.
"Liam, I have to think about you, because you are talking crazy." I sighed taking my hand away from his.
"Let me take Maya." He suddenly blurted out, a shocked look on his face after he said it.
"What?" I asked.
"Let me take her for a little while; just a week or two. Please?" he asked.
"No." I said.
"Emily, please, it will give you a break and give me some time with her." Liam reasoned with me, but I just shook my head.
"No Liam, I don't need a break from her. I had a break from her for a week and it was absolute hell for me." I said, getting mad now, "And do you know how dangerous it would be to take her on tour with you? She wouldn't get any privacy, and she's three!"
"I know, it was just an idea." Liam looked down.
"I'm sorry," I said, now placing my hand on his, "I just need to be with Maya. Do you understand that? It's like a mother's instinct."
"No I understand, it's just that..." he trailed off.
"It's just that what?" I asked.
"What about my father's instinct? It's all new for me, and I just want to get to know my daughter."
"I know Liam, you want to be with her, but all of this happened so suddenly and this just isn't the best time." I tried to reason with him, but when I looked back up at him I saw a tear leaving his eye.
"Emily, I need my daughter. I don't just want her, I need her. It's like something in me is telling me that I can't leave her." He pleads with me.
"I know Liam, and I'm so sorry..." I started, but he cut me off.
"Emily, please, just... I don't know what to do." He started to cry, and I pulled him into my chest.
"Liam..." I stroked his back, trying to calm him down.
"Emily, I want to be with you, but you aren't ready, so I'll wait, but I can't wait any longer for Maya." He explained to me, and I saw the pain behind his eyes; the truth behind his words, but I just couldn't give up my daughter.
"I'm sorry Liam." I sighed and he looked away from me. "Come on Maya, let's go to bed."
"No, I want to finish the movie!" she screamed.
"Maya, you listen to me young lady. It's time for you to go to bed." I sternly said, putting my hands on my hips.
"Ok..." Maya said quietly and got up from her spot on the floor. I turned off the TV and walked after her to the room where she would be sleeping.
"Say goodnight to daddy." I said as we walked past Liam.
"Goodnight daddy." She ran into Liam's arms and gave him a bog hug.
"Goodnight baby." He smiled and gave her a kiss on the head.
"Why are you crying?" she asked as she looked at his face, some tears under his eyes.
"It's ok, I'm not crying anymore." Liam smiled to reassure her.
"Ok..." she smiled and wiped the tears under his eyes, "Don't cry daddy, crying is no fun." She said and ran after me to her room.
"Alright Maya, brush your teeth and I'll read you a bedtime story." I smiled as I put toothpaste on her toothbrush.
"Can daddy read to me?" she asked, looking up at me and smiling.
"Sure." I reluctantly agreed and gave her the toothbrush, and went to go get Liam.
"I'm sorry Em, I just wanted to..." he started to say but I stopped him.
"Maya wants you to read to her." I said and smiled.
"Ok, what book?" he asked, worry in his eyes.
"There's no need to be worried Liam, it's just a kids book." I chuckled at his anxiousness to read a picture book to a three year old.
"I know, I know, I'm just, getting used to it." He smiled.
"Just let her choose a book from the bag I packed for her. There are a couple in there." I explained to him and he nodded, walking into the room.
I sat down on the couch and started going through my texts. There were a couple from Collin, some from my friends at NYU, and a couple from Bri.
Maybe I am wrong for not letting Liam take Maya. I mean, I am under a lot of stress, and he has missed the first three years of her life. He can never feel the excitement of her taking her first steps, or saying her first word, or going off to pre-school for the first time. Liam missed all of it.
But on the other hand I don't know if I could handle to be without Maya for a couple weeks. Even the thought of not having her for a couple days scares me. And I can't just take a few weeks off of school to go on tour with them, I've already missed so many days.
Is this how the rest of my life would be like? Wondering where Maya was going to be, with me or her dad? Or thinking about a schedule for Maya to stick to? Almost like she didn't have a family, just two separate parents.
