As I wobbled around my hospital room in my cast I saw a shirt lying on the floor and leaned forward to pick it up. I reached as far as I could until I gave up and hobbled back to my bag and zipped it up. Bri or someone could help me get the shirt later.
I moved the bag from my bed to the chair across the room and laid back down onto the bed. My leg was throbbing, and so was my head. I reached over to the table and grabbed my pain meds and the water cup the nurse brought to me a little while ago.
I gulped them down and almost immediately felt the relief going through my body.
"Knock knock..." Liam chirped as he came in through the door.
"Hey." I smiled and leaned up to give him a hug. He sat down next to me and smiled.
"Are you feeling any better?" he asked and I nodded.
"Yeah, I just took my pain meds, and I feel like I could run a marathon." I rolled my eyes sarcastically.
"No, are you actually feeling better?" he asked, leaning forward and grabbing my hand. A second later he let go. I wanted to reach out and take his hand in mine again, to feel that reassurance, but I don't.
"I'm ok, but my leg still hurts," I sigh, "But it's mainly from the cast. When can I take it off?"
"The doctor said we can take it off today." Liam informed me.
I leaned back into the pillows and drew a long, heavy sigh.
"Are you tired?" he asked me and I nodded, "Well we still have a couple hours before we have to leave, so I'll let you get some rest."
He got up from his chair and leaned in to give me another hug. Even the little gesture filled me with something I hadn't felt in years. Hope.
Hope that maybe everything would be ok in the end. Hope for a better life for Maya. And even though I wasn't ready, hope for me and Liam.
I waved to him and leaned back on the plastic pillow which I had grown so accustomed to. I let the pills take me away into my slumber.
...
Everything was cold, and I was back in the hospital, in so much pain, only this time it was my stomach. I looked over and saw Bri sitting next to me.
I looked down and saw my protruding stomach, a doctor sitting at the end of the bed and nurses running around with clip boards.
"Ok Emily, one last time." The doctor smiled to me and I nodded, feeling the heavy pain in my stomach.
And suddenly, I heard a piercing cry fill the room, and all the pain was gone from my stomach. I looked down and saw the doctor holding a baby. She was mine. I couldn't believe she was mine.
I wanted to lean over and kiss Liam, looking down at OUR baby, but when I looked over, there was Bri sitting there. Not even my parents were there, sitting by my side, being able to share this moment with me.
My mother would never even be able to meet her, and that killed me. But what killed me more was that the little girl in my arms, not even a minute old, would never know her father. And her father would never know her.
I woke up, tears on my cheeks. I sat up slowly and looked down, no big stomach, only a big white cast on my foot. I swung my legs over the bed and reached for my crutches against the wall.
I made my way over to the waiting room and found Bri playing with Maya at the kid's area.
"Hey baby." I smiled when Maya walked over to me and hugged my good leg.
