There was a knock at the door. I lifted my head up off the couch to see the time.
9:53
They're early. I got up lazily off the couch and fixed my pants, and walked over to the door.
"Hello, I'm Jane, I'm here for," she stopped to look down at her paperwork, "Emily and Maya Clarke."
"Yeah, Maya will be back in a couple minutes. She went out to the store with my roommate."
"Alright, well how about I just talk to you right now." She smiled a forced smile and walked into Bri's spacious apartment. She looked around and jotted down some notes on her paper.
"Would you like a drink?" I asked as the woman sat down.
"Just some water will be fine." She smiled and I walked over to the kitchen to get some water.
"So please tell me about your situation." She said when I came back and put down two cups of water on the dining table.
"Well, I was living in an apartment downtown for a couple years with Maya, and last week the café I worked at got bought so I lost my job. I'm studying at NYU so I can't have a full time job, and I'm actually looking for a part-time job right now. But for now I'm going to stay with my friend." I motioned to the apartment.
"And who looks after Maya while you are at work or at school?" she asked, writing things down on her god damned paper.
"She is at a daycare, run by my friend." I replied, taking a sip of water to have something to do other than fidget my hands.
"Mhm..." Jane mumbled and scribbled something else down.
"Yeah..." I looked up at the clock, suddenly fascinated by the ticking time.
"And at your meeting with Mr. Nichols yesterday you told us that... Liam Payne was the father?" she asked with a smirk on her face. She recognized his name.
"Yes that's right." I said rather defensively.
And just as she was about to ask another question I heard the door unlock and shuffling feet across the hard wood floor.
"Hey Em, I got Maya a lolly if that's..." Liam started to say until he walked into the kitchen, his eyes wide with fear at the sight of the woman. He knw who she was, and by the looks of it she knew who he was.
"Well hello there..." the woman said, standing up and shaking his hand, "I'm Jane, I'll be doing the interview today."
"Hello..." Liam said awkwardly and sat down next to me. Next Bri came in with Maya holding her hand.
"I'll go ahead and go to the office, they need me there." Bri said, giving Maya to me and walking toward the door. I mouthed a quick 'thank you' to her before she left.
"So, Liam, did you know you were Maya's father before yesterday?" the woman asked. Liam looked to me with sad eyes and shook his head. "Emily, did you know he was the father this whole time?"
I nodded my head slowly.
"So why did you keep it a secret for so long?" she asked. Is this really how this interview should be going?
"Because... Because I was giving Liam the chance to live his dream." I said slowly, ignoring the tears coming to the brim of my eyes, "He was about to try out for X Factor and I didn't want him to be held back by me and a baby. I knew that he would quit his dream for us, and I wouldn't let that happen."
"Alright, can I speak to Maya?" she asked standing up and walking over to Maya who hid in my neck as the woman came over.
"Yeah..." I said sadly, and took Maya off my lap and onto her feet, "Can you listen to the nice lady for a couple minutes and answer the questions?" I asked Maya.
She looked over at the woman and nodded, walking away with her into a different room.
*Liam's POV*
"So, now what?" I ask, shifting uncomfortably in my chair.
"We wait, I guess." Emily shrugged and stood up, walking to the kitchen.
I was furious, no I was beyond furious with Emily for keeping this away from me. I missed three years of my daughter's life, and I can never have them back.
But what Emily just said, about her letting me live out my dream, changed something in me. Of course I was still upset with her keeping this away from me, but I wasn't so mad anymore.
She was right, if she told me that she was pregnant with my baby, I wouldn't have tried out for the X Factor, and I would've stayed behind for them. But Emily's twisted logic did change my life.
I was on top of the world doing what I loved, but I wasn't with whom I loved.
These past three years, a day hasn't gone by without me thinking about her. I always wondered why she left. Was it because I did something wrong? Was it someone else?
But never in a million years would I have thought that she was pregnant!
And now, sitting here, in this little apartment in New York, I realized that Emily's thinking was right. She was right to keep it away from me. Sure it was wrong, but it was the right decision for us.
In a strange way, she did it for me.
I know how hard it must've been to raise Maya on her own, with almost no money, working and studying day and night. And I would hope that she loved me enough for her to really think about the decision she made.
"Hey Em?" I called to her. She came almost immediately came out, a forced smile on her face.
"Yeah?" she asked, her beautiful green eyes shining from the tears.
"I..." I stopped for a second to think about how to phrase it, "Thank you, for... uhm... doing what you did."
"What do you mean?" she asked, sitting down on the other side of the table from me.
"For taking on Maya by yourself to let me live my dream." I said, and all of a sudden Emily's face brightened to the same bright eyes girl I knew before.
"You're not mad?" she asked, excitedly.
"How can I be mad? Of course I'm upset that I missed out on three years of my daughter's life, but I can't be mad after what you did for me. You let me live out the dream." I explained.
"Liam, you don't know how hard it was to leave you. I knew that you would love me and Maya, I never lost faith that you would, but it was so hard leaving you. I really loved you." She said.
I couldn't speak. I don't know if I should be happy to say that she loved me or said that she said it in past tense.
Did she love me still as much as I loved her? Because I never stopped loving her.
