*Emily’s POV*

I heard something come from the right of my head. I tried turning my head to see what it was, but my neck wouldn’t move. I tried to open my eyes but they wouldn’t open. Again, I heard the faint beeping next to my head, but now it was louder and faster. And suddenly I felt something in my chest, something painful.

My back arched in pain as the ache spread from my chest and up toward my neck and head. I tried to move my arm to massage my head but again, it wouldn’t move.

“Liam!” I heard someone from my left yell. Was Liam here? Was Maya?

“Liam is that you?” someone yelled again. I tried to sit up and look at who was in the room with me, but I just couldn’t find the strength.

And suddenly the beeping got even louder and faster and the pain just grew and grew in my chest. I put all of my energy into lifting my arm, and it worked. I lifted my arm up a little bit and it hit someone’s chest; a man’s.

“She’s responsive.” A man said from next to me, but I was too dizzy to tell which side of me it came from.

“We need you to get out of the room ma’am. We’ll call you back in when she is fully awake.

“No, I need to stay I here.” A woman said. When no one said anything else I assumed she was let to stay.

“Get the heart monitor back up.” A man said all of a sudden. There was a lot of beeping when it suddenly all stopped and I groaned from the relief of the pain leaving my body slowly.

            “Liam? She’s awake.” Someone said.

“Liam?” I asked faintly and slowly opened my eyes to see a bright white light shining down on me. I squinted and slowly got used to the brightness.

“She’s up. Emily is ok, and she wants to talk to you.” Now I recognized her voice as Bri’s.

“What?” I asked, lifting my head slightly to see around the room. I saw three men standing around me, writing something down in their clipboards, and a disheveled Bri walking toward the edge of my bed.

“Emily, it’s me, Bri.” She said, picking up my hand and stroking it, and all the doctors left the room.

“Maya?” I asked, looking around to see her light brown pigtails bobbing around, but she wasn’t there.

“She’s… with Liam.” She reluctantly said.

“What day is it?” I asked, trying to sit up, but sinking back down when I found it too painful.

“It’s the fifteenth.” She said and I nodded.

            “So where they?” I asked.

“Liam and Maya?” she asked and I nodded, but she wouldn’t answer my question.

“Where are they?” I asked again, but Bri looked anywhere but at me.

“Bri…” I said, starting to get worried.

“Liam took her with him to LA.” She quickly said, barely loud enough for me to hear it, but I heard it.

            “What?” I asked, in shock.

“He said that he was her father and he should get some time with her, and insisted. I couldn’t just say no.” she explained herself.

“It’s ok Bri, it’s not your fault, and I understand, but are they still there?” I asked.

“Yeah, I just called him when your heart monitor was going all wacky.” She said.

“Can you call him? I want to talk to him.” I asked and Bri nodded, taking out her phone and dialing. She handed it to me and I thanked her. She walked out of the room.

*Liam’s POV*

I was pacing around the hotel room, phone in hand waiting for a call. She’s awake, she’s ok, so why am I so scared of what she will say to me?

Suddenly my phone rings, and Bri’s caller ID is showing.

“Bri? Bri, how is she?” I ask as soon as I pick up the phone.

“Liam, it’s me.” I heard the soft voice on the other line that could only belong to one person.

“Emily?” I ask, “How are you feeling?”

“I’m ok, a little light-headed, but I’m fine.” She replies, her voice telling me she is obviously not fine.

“When are you going to be out of the hospital?”

“I don’t know, a few days, maybe a week?” she says, her voice tired.

“Ok…” I sit down on the bed and pull my hair lightly.

“When are you coming with Maya?” she asks.

“I have the plane tickets for the seventeenth at night, so we will get there early in the morning on the eighteenth.”

“Ok…” she says, “can I talk to Maya?”

“Well, she’s asleep now, it is five in the morning here.” I reply.

“Right, sorry for waking you up.” She apologizes, and I can just imagine the face she is making. Her cheeks a light pink shade and twisting her hair lightly with her hand.

“It’s ok, I would’ve woken up in an hour anyway. You just gave me a head start so I wouldn’t be late.” I chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.

“Ok, well call when Maya wakes up, maybe we can face chat?” she asks.

“Of course. She’s been asking about you a lot lately.” I add to try and cheer Emily up, but it seems to have done the opposite.

“How is she?” she asks, and when I don’t answer she realizes that I am hiding something, “Please be honest.”

“To be honest, she’s doing ok. She is really happy, made friends with Lux, but she has nightmares…” and before I could finish she interrupts me.

            “What kind of nightmares?”

“She’s saying that she is being taken away, and that we don’t get her back this time.” I sigh, my heart aching for the little girl in the room across the hall from where I am sitting.

“Oh god…” she sniffles, “I am going to kill the son of a bitch that started all of this.”

“It’s ok, I think when we get back to New York she’ll be fine. She just misses you a lot.” I try to reassure Emily.

“I hope so. Maya deserves none of this. She shouldn’t have to pay for my mistakes.” Emily says, and I hear her lightly crying on the other end.

“Emily, you haven’t made any mistakes…” I say.

“Yes I have. I kept her away from her father. It can’t get much worse than that.” She sniffles again, and I hear her blow her nose.

“Trust me…” I say, comforting her, “it could be a lot worse.”
