“Em, do you want to go out with him?” Bri asked as she brought me a cup of tea. She was spending the night at my house and helping me with Maya since she was still sick.
“Well yesterday when I forgot about him, I felt bad. I think I wanted to go on a date with him. But I also don’t want to date him. Eventually he would find out about Maya and that would just be a terrible conversation.” I answered.
“Don’t worry about Maya for now, worry about you. It’s been such a long time since you’ve done something for yourself.” Bri said, trying to keep me from thinking too much.
“I don’t know Bri, I have to think Maya. It’s a responsibility I have because she is my daughter.” I reply, remembering my responsibilities as a mother.
“Don’t you think Liam wants those responsibilities too?” Bri asks and I think. What if Liam wants to be a father? What if I tell him and he is ok with it?
I go to sleep later with the question floating around in my head. I really need to sort everything out, because Liam was back in my life, whether I liked it or not.
“Mommy!” I heard Maya yell from her room. I look over at the clock on my wall and see it’s seven in the morning, Maya’s usual waking time.
“Yes sweetie?” I ask as I walk toward Maya. She is wearing her warmest princess pajamas and looks burning hot and red. I really should take her to the doctor.
“My tummy hurts.” She states looking down at her stomach. I lift up her shirt and rub her stomach as she lays back down.
“Bri, I think I’m going to take Maya to the doctor later today.” I call to Bri who is sleeping in the other room.
“Ok, I need to get down to the daycare in a little bit anyway. Thanks for waking me.” She called back and I heard her feet pad across the hardwood floor.
“Baby, let’s get you dressed. I’m going to take you to the doctor, he will make your tummy feel better.” I smile to Maya and pick her up to get her ready.
After dressing her in her favorite pink skirt and shirt I start getting myself ready, but am distracted by a knock at the door.
“Liam?” I ask as I open the door to see him standing there. He looks at me and smiles lightly.
“I was hoping you didn’t have classes today and we could hang out?” he asked, staying out in the hallway.
“Uhm, I don’t have classes but I need to take Maya to the doctor.” I smile weakly, and see Liam’s smile fade. He needs to understand that if he wants to be at least my friend, it will be difficult. I have another human being to take care of. “But please, come in.”
Liam steps inside and walks over to the couch, sitting down and looking awkwardly around until his eyes land on Maya, walking out of the bedroom and toward Liam.
“LiLi!” she calls and runs over to him. It’s amazing how much of a connection she has made with him over the one time they have met.
“Hey!” he smiles and puts her on his lap, giving her his hands to play with.
As Liam entertained Maya I walked back into my room to get changed, where Bri was just getting out of the shower.
