*Emily’s POV*
It was seven thirty- eight… now seven-thirty nine. The minutes passed so quickly, I hadn’t even noticed I was about to be late to work. I quickly turned on the ignition and sped through the New York traffic to the café.“Sorry I’m late. Traffic.” I said rushing in at exactly seven forty-five.
“You’re not late.” Bill waved to me from the kitchen. I smiled appreciatively to him, before heading to the back to put down my purse.
“Hey, how was the trip?” Julia, one of the other waitresses, asked.
“It was amazing. Really relaxing; I needed it.” I smiled, putting on my apron.
“Yeah, you looked like you did.” Julie smiled, “How’s Maya doin’?”
“Fine, she really didn’t want to leave Mexico, she actually threw a fit.” I half smiled, and started to walk out to the tables that were full to take orders.
“Hey Collin, the usual?” I asked, walking up to Collin, who was sitting and staring intently at the computer in front of him.
“No thanks Em. Just ten cups of coffee.” He said not taking his eyes off of the computer.
“Why?” I asked, refilling his empty glass of coffee.
“I have a big test this afternoon that basically says if I can get my degree or not.” He said, taking a sip of the coffee as soon as I finished pouring it.
“Well, I’ll leave you to it.” I smiled and walked away. I continued to take orders, talk to people, serve food, but my stomach just didn’t feel right. Not as in a sick way, I just didn’t feel good.
I knew that until I talked to my dad, nothing would be ok. I had to get it off my chest.
“Hey Julie, I’m going to take my break. I’ll be back in twenty minutes.” I waved to Julie before grabbing my purse and walking outside. I walked a couple blocks before getting to the park that I usually wet to during my break. It was a small park, not more than thirty feet, but it had a slide and a set of swings.
I sat down on the swing and took out my phone, dialing my dad’s phone number. I pressed the call button, and sat patiently on the swing for him to answer.
I secretly wanted him not to answer so I would just leave a message, but I knew that I would have to face him at some point, and better now than later.
“Hello?” the familiar sound of my dad’s voice came through the phone.
“Hey dad…” I mumbled.
