Dear Prison Diary,
To say I was shocked was a huge understatement.
I was totally stunned.
Nothing prepared me for that. Absolutely nothing.
It was literally happening right before my eyes, yet I couldn't understand it.. She was standing directly in front of me, her cold body practically pressed up against mine. Her hand wrapped tightly around my wrist like a handcuff. Her dark and serious eyes staring up at the unexpecting prison guards and still I couldn't believe it was real.
There was no sound in the cell. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
You could see it on their poor faces, the guards were not expecting any input from my cellmate. But you could also see that they saw the seriousness in her eyes.
They looked like ghosts, all pale, their eyes were bloodshot.
Up until that point I didn't think Violet had ever confronted a guard before.
She just did what she was told just so she could get by. She never talked back and she never lost her temper that's why her reactions to the guards and mines were so different. While I was always getting agitated, she stayed absolutely calm all the time.
So this was possibly a shock to them.
Still, not as much as it was to me.
'She's protecting me.' I heard my voice say blankly inside my head. It wasnt a question and it also wasnt a statement. It was a fact.
"She...cares?" I whispered so softly from behind her that not even I could hear it. This was a question and I didn't know who I was asking it to. Was it to me? Was it to her? Was it to anyone who could answer? I didn't know.
My mind was still aimlessing tying to wrap my head around the whole situation. Everything happened so quick. One minute I was sitting down on Violets bed wondering why she cared about how I ate, the next minute there were four people in our cell and Violet was guarding me from two of them.
'Look up' my conscience said. 'See what's going on.'
So I did look up.
Violet wasnt moving an inch. Her whole body was as still as a stone statue and I could hear her breathing hard through her nose. That told me she was not the same Violet she was a minute ago.
This was angry Violet. Remember "Im going to kill you!!!" Violet? Yeah that one.
"Step aside." One of the guards commanded finally gaining his voice back and tried to take a step forward.
Violet leaned in a little more so she was nose to nose with the tall guard and whispered darkly through clenched teeth "Push me."
How could two simple words sound so deadly?
The guard's jaw clenched in frustration as he struggled to stare directly into my cellmate's. creepy eyes.
I knew how he felt.
That was the first time I had ever felt sorry for a man.
He turned his head slowly and peaked at his buddy who, I wasnt sure, was two feet farther away than he was before.
Still he decided to speak.
"Either you get out of our way or we move you out." He said with his arms crossed and his words would have affected me more if his voice wasnt shaking so much.
