Dear Prison Diary,
I had been sitting there inside the cell with Violet for two hours and she hadn't spoken to me once. Not once. I was bored out of my mind and even when I tried to start up a conversation with her, she would not answer. She just sat down all the way off to the dark corner like the first time I saw her.
Do you ever wonder what goes on through someone's mind? Like what in the world is that person thinking about right now? Well, that's what I was wondering about her. Her facial expression hadn't changed since we entered the cell. She just sat there, three lines on her forehead formed by her frown that she held for the pass two hours.
I was so curious. What was running through that mind that caused her not to speak, not to move, not to show any emotion in any way? Maybe I was overthinking the whole thing. Maybe it was nothing.
I directed my attention to a different pressing matter. I wanted to know what it was that she did to stop Skunk from hitting her. I also really wanted to know why she had saved me from her in the first place. I was nothing to her! I was just a naive girl who thought I could change the world. That's what she said. So why did she help me?
For some strange reason, this made me a little sad to know that she though of me that way. Only a little.
I sat up in my bed sitting criss-cross as my fingers fiddled with the end of my braid. Twisting it through my fingers and braiding it back again. I pulled my braid close to my nose and sniffed. I really needed to wash my hair.
I threw my braid over my shoulder and looked back at Violet. She still sat there staring at her hands sitting with her legs straight in front of her. I needed to talk to her. I needed to talk to someone or else my brain would explode. Talking was the only thing I could do and Violet was my only option.
"V-Violet?" I said loud enough for her to hear. She slowly looked up from her hands and her dark eyes peered up at me. Her hair hung from one side and she raised her eyebrows. I waited for her to answer but she didn't. I realized that she was waiting for me to continue.
"I was...curious. How did you manage to take Skunk down so easily?" I asked her as simply as possible so she would actually answer my question instead of discarding it. She looked back down at her hands for a second and then looked back up at me. I stared at her waiting for her answer.
"Stand up." She said and slowly got up rising to her feet pulling her smock down a little. I raised my eyebrow at her wondering if she was serious.
"Yes, I'm serious. Now get up." She said rolling her eyes and crossing her arms over her chest. I snatched the sheet off my body and climbed off of the bed and ignored the freezing floor. I walked up to her a little nervous of what she was going to tell me or what she was going to do.
She wet her red lips and cracked her pale knuckles causing me to gulp.
"Try to punch me." She said out of nowhere and I frowned confused.
"Punch you? What? Why?" I asked squinting my eyes suspiciously. Her lips formed a tight line and she inhaled taking a deep breath.
"Shut up and do it." She said softly and took another deep breath. I didn't know what she was trying to do but whatever it was I hoped it would answer my question. I hesitantly raised up my arm and positioned it behind me. I was nervous because the only other time I'd ever punched someone was when a girl from the facility stole my crayons and broke all of them because she didn't like me. Oh yeah, I gave it to her right in the face.
I revved up my fist like an engine and drove it towards Violet's face but before I could hit her she grabbed my fist in mid-air. I gasped as her hand squeezed on my fist like it was nothing. She held my fist like that for a while and I stared at her trying to see what she'd do next and she stared back at me still with her stone face. I looked into her eyes and got lost in them. They were so dark but looked so deep, full of hurt and emotion and pain.
"Hey! You listening?" I heard her say to me catching my attention.
"Huh?...oh...uh yeah." I stuttered and she nodded her head and started speaking.
"You build up all the energy in your body and force it into one action. I call it the Blow. Like this." She takes another deep breath and in one quick move, she pulls my fist pulling me to her and turning me around so my back was pressed up against her.
I gasped again and my heartbeat started to quicken. It was practically beating out of my chest. This was the closest I had ever been to Violet and it made me nervous. I could feel my body shaking with fear and also...something else and I really hoped she would release me soon or else I'd burst into flames.
I could feel her face pressed against my hair and I wondered if she noticed how bad it smelled. I hoped she didn't though.
"How did you learn how to do this?" I asked, my voice breathy as I kept my head down trying not to think about the close proximity. I waited for her answer but she didn't give me one.
She held me like that and I could feel her breathing on my back. It tickled the back of my neck and I squirmed uncomfortably shifting a little. This seemed to alert her because she spoke again.
"And then you just release." She said this and before I could even respond she pushed me towards the bed and I grabbed onto the metal saving myself from bashing my head open. I screamed and held onto it with all my might. I almost died! No, I was not being a drama queen readers.
"Are you completely insane?!" I looked back at her and yelled while she tilted her head to the side like she was the most innocent girl in the world. Innocent my ass!!
"Not completely." She replied with a shrug and went to sit back down in her special dark corner.
I stared back at this strange girl trying to figure her mind out which I knew would be impossible. So I decided to just ask her the question that had been lingering in my mind for two hours.
"Violet, why did you save me from that prisoner?" I asked her quietly and got up to sit on her bed praying she wouldn't mind. She looked up at me with a frown and then rolled her eyes.
"She needed to get taught a lesson. It wasn't for you." She replied calmly and I nodded but still something didn't make sense.
"You could have let her hit me though..." I added with doubt and she rolled her eyes once again becoming completely annoyed with me. Her lips formed into a tight line again and her eye twitched.
"Would you have rathered she had hit you?" She said through gritted teeth. I thought for a second.
"No." I replied.
"Then be happy that I stopped her and shut up." She said sternly and went back to staring at her hands probably thinking about whatever she had thought about before.
I couldn't help a small smile to appear on my face. I felt like she was starting to warm up to me. You know...in her own special little way...
