Even Scott was about to speak up about his attitude, until Avi pulled the car over at a gas station, and then turned to face the others.

Kevin had already begun getting out of the car. "Would you like some help, Sir?"

Avi held a hand up toward him. "Close the door, Kevin."

Kevin obeyed in an instant. "Sir, is something wrong?"

"I'm getting to that."

Kevin nodded once. Right. That means to be quiet.

Avi couldn't bear to meet their eyes, even turning away from Kirstie to look down at the steering wheel. "So. Today I have to go to dinner with my father and my sister. But before you ask, no. None of you may come with me. I don't trust my father around any of you."

Kirstie reached over to grab one of his hands. "Wait, go back. Why do you need to go to dinner with them?"

"It's just.. Like an annual tradition that we have. I thought maybe you guys could go out with Jake and Travis maybe? Like, for dinner. Or Todrick could make that dish for Alexander again. Up to you, I don't mind either way. Just let me know what you decide to do, so that I know where you guys are."

Kevin spoke up again. "Sir, will you be coming home tonight, or staying?"

"It depends what Esther is going to do. I wouldn't want to leave her with him, but if she decides to go then I will go as well."

Kirstie couldn't help but wonder. "Alpha.. Is Esther bringing her Alpha?"

He finally turned to look at her. "Kit, I'm not trying to leave you out. I'm doing this for your own safety. No, Esther will not be bringing her Alpha. It's not safe for him either."

Scott gently moved Mitch off of him, the Omega still asleep, and leaned him the other way to lean on Kirstie, thus allowing him to get out of the car.

He silently walked over to the gas pump, and waited for Avi to follow.

When Avi appeared beside him, Scott immediately spoke. "I'm really sorry, Avi."

"Why?"

Scott paused, lowering his voice a little so the others couldn't hear him. "It's your mom's birthday, isn't it?"

Avi stopped what he was doing, shooting Scott a glare. "Would you keep your voice down? That's none of your business."

"Alpha, I'd like to come with you to the dinner. Please."

"Absolutely not. You know how my father is."

"You're grieving. He wouldn't do anything to me."

Avi eyed him up and down, as he quickly paid for the gas on the machine, while Scott attached the hose to the car. "Why? Why do you want to be there?"

"I want to be sure the two of you are safe."

"Bullshit. What's the real reason?"

"Sir, I'm being serious. You can't possibly protect yourself as well as your sister, when you're in that state of mind."

"Listen, you ass--"

"That wasn't supposed to be an insult! I just..." Scott frowned, looking over his shoulder at Avi. "Please? Let me protect you, please?"

Avi took a deep breath, feeling himself give in a little. "You don't have to do that."

"I want to."

"If you feel obligated to or something..."

"No, no. I want to help. I want to be there for you. I'll even drive you there and back so you don't have to."
