Chapter 9

Peeta's P.O.V.

Oh I can't believe Katniss did that.

What if mom had hit her with that spoon? I would never be able to forgive myself, I really wouldn't.

"Peeta would you please, stop thinking about that now?" Katniss asks, intertwining her fingers with mine.

"No", I mumble.

"But Peeta, you got the spoon on your yaw, not me", she says. "I wanted it to be me, but it wasn't, it was you".

Yeah, and it hurt like crazy, and I don't usually just jump in front of my mother and gladly take the spoon or rolling pin, but to protect Katniss, I would gladly take a bullet if I had to.

I don't like how she talks about how she wanted it to be her who got the spoon in her face. I don't even want to think about that. It was so close to actually happen. If I had just been one second slower, Katniss would be the one with an aching jaw, and not me.

"Stop! Just stop, okay", I say, not wanting to think about that anymore.

"Okay, baby", Katniss says, kissing my cheek.

I smile.

When we get back to school, I remember that my jaw is red and it's going to form a bruise.

What am I going to say to the others when they see my red jaw?

Oh come on Peeta. Think!

I'm usually good at lying, but what am I going to say?

We get back into the cafeteria.

We sit down at the table as if nothing happened.

I see that Gale is flexing his biceps. What the hell is he doing?

I see Gale glance at Skeeter all the time.

He likes her? Wow.

"Peeta what did you do?" Annie asks and I look at her.

"What?" I ask confused.

"Your jaw Peeta", Finnick says.

Oh shit! I totally forgot about that. But now I feel the pain again.

Gale stops flexing his biceps and looks at me as well as every one else at the table.

Great... This is just lovely. I've got everyone's eyes on me, waiting for an answer, that I don't even have. I'm not gonna tell them that my mother abuses me. I'm just not gonna do that. Katniss is the only one that knows, and it's gonna stay that way.

"Oh, this?" I ask pointing at my jaw and shrug like its nothing.

"Duh!" Gale says.

What did I do? Come on Peeta think!

"Oh I was just clumsy", I say. "I fell down the stone stairs here when I left".

Okay that's convincing. Not! Oh I'm so stupid sometimes.

But if I'm lucky they'll believe me, because even if the story isn't very convincing, people use to believe me, I guess they do because I sound convincing.

"Okay", Glimmer says.

That's all? Okay?

Hm... Maybe I'm even more convincing than I thought. But I've had a bit of training though. I mean ever since I was little. I had to come up with excuses to why I came to school with a black eye, or swollen and bruised face, or why I was sore most of the times and limped.
