Chapter 14: The truth

Chapter 14

Katniss P.O.V.

Finnick is driving me to the painting store again. I don't want Peeta near Skeeter until I understand what was really happening between them.

"Stay here, I won't be long", I say to Finnick who nods.

I walk inside the store and I see Skeeter at the counter.

"I want those things I ordered", I say in a kind of harsh voice.

Skeeter looks up.

"Katniss..." She whispers.

"Save it Skeeter, how could you?" I say.

"It's not what you think", she says.

"Yeah, because that exact phrase will definitely make me believe you", I say rolling my eyes. "Can I just get my things?!"

Skeeter takes up a big brown package and puts it on the counter.

"But can you please just listen to me?" She asks.

Well that's why I came here. To talk to Skeeter. But really, I don't really know if I wanna talk to her.

I just feel so damn frustrated. Like why would I listen to her? I really don't know why I should.

"And why would I do that?!" I ask.

"Because I can explain", Skeeter says.

Oh yeah. That's why I came here. Not to just talk to her, but to hear her explanation. Peeta says that she has a good one, and it better be a good one as well, or else I'm gonna be angry for real this time, I mean really angry.

I look at Skeeter and she really do seem sad.

"Than do!" I say.

And that's when I first heard about Skeeters mother beating her up.

Skeeters as well?

From what I've understand, her mother started to beat her when they first moved here and Peeta saw her coming out with a bloody face.

So he has just been trying to help Skeeter to cope with all if this.

Oh I'm such an idiot. I should've realized that something wasn't alright. But I didn't. I only saw my own pain that I was too blind to see what was going on.

And because Peetas mother is beating him badly, no I mean really badly almost every day, he's the right person to help Skeeter cope.

"Skeeter I'm sorry", I say.

She walks up to me and I embrace her.

"But why didn't you just tell me?" I ask.

"I don't know", she says. "Peeta kept telling me that I should've, and that you wouldn't say anything to others. And I do trust you, it's not about that, it's about me not wanting to believe that this is real. And if more people know, than I'm gonna know that I'm in real life. A really bad one".

I've also had my struggles. Everything didn't just come easy to me. I had to work hard to get what I had.

I kept my life a secret. I kept me and Prim cleaned up and tried to put food on our table. Annie was the only one that knew about it.

"But I told you that you can talk about anything with me".

"Okay I'm gonna tell you something, no one else knows about", she says and I get curious.

I laugh and say okay.

"I'm in love with Gale..."
