Chapter 16: Peeta?

Chapter 16

Katniss P.O.V.

"Katniss, dad wanted me to invite you to dinner with the rest of my family", Peeta says as we jump into his car.

Dinner with the rest of his family? Well that would actually be fun. I do have a good relation to them already, I mean they did know me when I was little and know I remember that I did know them as well. I remember almost everything now. I found all my photo albums from that time.

But... I don't know. Will his mother be there?

"My mother won't be there, though", Peeta says as if he senses my question. He caresses my cheek. "I would never ever let her near you ever again".

I smile. But I don't like that. I mean if he's serious, I'm not gonna be able to tell his mother off. And I feel like I need to. I wanna make her not to hurt Peeta. Even though that's pretty much impossible of what I've heard.

"Peeta..." I start, but he interrupts me as he starts the car.

"No Katniss, I'm not gonna risk you getting hurt again, I just not", he says sternly. I've actually never heard his voice this hard before. I mean, I've heard him angry of course. But not like this... It's, it's like ... He sounds scary. And that scares me. "I'm never letting my mother or you near each other, and that's final!"

I can't bring myself to say anything. I just look at him. His eyes are now dark blue. I think his eyes changes color with every feeling Peeta has. Not a completely different color, just another shape of blue. His normal is deep ocean clear blue. But I've seen the torques as well, but that's when he's really sad, and whenever he looks at me his normal color starts to glisten, and now they're deep dark blue, and he's angry. But I've never seen him angry this way.

I feel cold. I must be pale and I see my hands shake a little.

I'm actually afraid of my own boyfriend.

"O-okay", I say low.

Peeta looks at me for a second and looks alarmed.

"Oh god", he says and than he pulls up to the side of the road. He puts on both of the winkers.

I don't dare to look at Peeta now. What's he gonna do?

"Katniss..." He says softly.

He doesn't sound scary anymore. He sounds loving. This is usually the tone he uses when he talks to me. This is my boyfriend.

I actually dare looking up at him again. His eyes aren't dark blue anymore. It's starting to get back to its normal color. Maybe I imagine. But it feels like I can see his eyes color change back. But that can't be right. Can it?

"Katniss I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry", he says, sounding almost panicked. "I can get like this when I think about my mother and what she does to me, even if she's not here and beats me, I can clearly feel the pain I would get if she were, and the fact that you almost got beaten as well, make so so mad".

Oh Peeta. Suddenly I'm not afraid anymore. I don't really know why I were in the first place, I mean I know that Peeta would never ever hurt me.

Stupid! Stupid!

I just wanna smack myself.

"But now you're afraid of me, I'm so sorry Katniss", he says and I see tears forking in his now torques eyes, but he won't let his tears spill. "I'm so sorry, baby, I would never hurt you, never".

"I know that Peeta", I say, caressing his cheek. He closes his eyes at my touch. "I was just surprised, I do know that you wouldn't hurt me. And I love you so much babe".

"I love you too, more than life itself", he says, than leaning in and press his lips on to mine.

Usually I don't like it when he says that. I don't like it when he says that he loves me more than he loves his own life. I don't like it this time either, but this time I get a warm feeling I can't push away. And I feel bad about it.

Peeta pulls away and starts to drive the car again, but he doesn't look at me though. That's just because he knows that I don't want him to, as long as he's behind the wheel he has to look at the road.

Peeta pulls up at the driveway to his old house as I just sent a text to Finnick and Annie, telling them that we won't be home until tonight sometime.

Peeta still has a key to this house. His father wanted him to keep it, so he did. He put the key into the door and opens the door.

I get hit by a wonderful smell the second I'm inside the house.

Okay, I clearly understand where Peeta got his cooking talent from. Him and his father must be very much alike, not only in appearance, but in personalities and skills as well.

We take off our shoes before walking to the kitchen where his father stands by the stove, stirring in a big pot. I wonder what is is.

"Hey dad", Peeta says.

He's father turns around and look at us with a big smile on his face.

"Hey you two", he says.

"Thanks for inviting me Mr. Mellark", I say.

"Oh Katniss, you're a part of this family", Mr. Mellark chuckles. "And please, we've known each other long enough for you to start calling me Peter".

Hahaha! Peter ... Peeta, those names are much alike. I bet it was Mr. Mellark who named Peeta. But it's cute.

"Thank you Mr. Mella... Thank you Peter", I say.

Peeta wraps his arms around my waist.

"What's for dinner dad?" Peeta asks ands bury his face into my hair. Smelling it.

"Chicken curry stew with rice and salad on the side", Mr. Mellark says jokingly at the last part with the salad.

I giggle.

"Anything to you're liking, Mr and Ms?" Mr. Mellarks.

"Everything sounds delicious Peter", I say, trying to keep my laugh inside.

I don't think I've understand how much Peeta and his father really are alike until right now.

Peeta and I walk into the living room where his brothers are sitting, watching TV.

"Hey!" I say.

They look up at us.

"Well hello there", Victor says.

"How're you guys doing?" Felix asks.

"Good, you?" I ask.

"Never better", he says chuckling.

I laugh.

I sit down in Peetas lap as he sits down in the sofa. I put my head between Peetas neck and shoulder.

I love Peetas family. They're so nice. Even though he's brothers teases him a lot, but I guess that it's some sort of a law between brothers. They need to tease each other. Otherwise they will die.

I just hope that Peetas mother won't come home. But because Peeta seems relaxed, I don't think she will.
