Chapter 27: Not the same

Chapter 27

Katniss P.O.V.

Annie drives me to Skeeter. We gotta talk to her.

I can't believe what Gale told us. I just can't. Skeeter wouldn't do that. She would never, and I know that because I know her. She's like a sister to me, her and Annie.

Annie drives really carefully but I still dig my sharp nails into the skin of my palms as I make a grimace.

In only comfortable to sit in a driving car, where Finnick or Peeta is the once driving the car.

"Yeez thanks for the trust Kat", Annie says, giggling.

She knows very well how I feel about cars so she's not serious. And that's why she drives so carefully as well, she doesn't usually do that. She likes to ... Speed it up. Ugh.

"You're so very welcome babe", I say and Annie giggles even more.

Soon Annie stops the car and I wonder why, but that's when I see Skeeter. I recognize her even if she has her back against us. Annie recognized her as well, which was why she stopped the car. Why we recognize her is because she has always the same style on her clothes; guys shirts and skinny jeans with sneakers. She's walking down the road. Why is she? Cars drive by here all the freaking time, in Hugh speed. She could get hit.

Annie opens my window and I shout at Skeeter.

"Hey! You jump into this damn car immediately young lady!" I shout in a sharp voice.

Skeeter turns around and looks at me.

"Katniss..." She mumbles, her voice isn't sounding like hers.

She has the cute white kitty Savannah in her arms.

I look at Skeeter as she walks up closer to the car.

Her eyes are so red. She hasn't had much sleep that's clearly visible, but what I also can see is that she has no life in her eyes. Her hair isn't combed, it's mess. She doesn't usually wear make up, never if she isn't going to a party or something, but she never needs the make up. Now when I look at her I think that she looks years older. The smile that's almost always on her lips, is long gone.

Poor Skeeter. Whatever happened, really broke her.

"What are you doing here?" Skeeter asks in a dead voice.

"We could ask you the exact same thing Skeeter", I say.

"Yeah get in the car at once!" Annie says.

Skeeter shrugs her shoulders and open the door to the backseat. She crawls inside and lay down in the whole backseat.

Gosh, what's wrong with her?

Annie drives into a parking lot and we all get out of the car.

We walk up to the playground and sits on a swing that is big and wide, like a basket really.

Skeeter only pets Savannah and refuses to look me or Annie in the eyes.

I try to give her time to talk. But come on, she's not gonna talk unless I force her to. I don't wanna force her to talk, but what else can I do?

"Skeeter tell us, please", I say.

"There's nothing to tell", Skeeter says but even she knows that this was her worst lie ever.

"Oh come on, don't try to fool yourself", I say. "Gale shows up in the middle of the night so drunk that he doesn't even know what time on the day it was, he cries and runs into a wall and passes out, this morning he thew up and Peeta and Finnick had to shower him. And all of this because he says that you broke up with him!"

For the first time Skeeter looks up and looks me in the eyes.

"Gale was drunk?" She asks.

"He was so drunk the alcohol won't get out of he's system for weeks!" Annie says.

"He never drinks", Skeeter protests in her dead voice.

"Yeah, but yesterday it was like he had been drinking to make up for all the years he hasn't been drinking", I say. "Trust me, it wasn't pretty to witness".

Skeeter's eyes are still dead. Not a single tear is threatening to escape.

"That was unlucky", she says.

Is she kidding me right now? What the hell is wrong with her?!

"Skeeter, did you break up with Gale, yes or no?!" Annie asks.

"Yes".

WHAT?! Skeeter broke up with Gale?! What the hell? Why would she do that? No wonder she's a mess, what ever made her break up with Gale, must have been something unpleasant. She would never do that willingly and just look at the state she's in right now...

"Why would you do that?" I ask.

"I got tired of him", Skeeter says simply.

I swear, I can literary see her tongue turning black this very second.

"Skeeter drop the crap and just tell us, what are you afraid of? You can tell the two of us anything!" I say.

Skeeter looks at me. She have been telling me that she likes if when I'm hard and not a sissy towards her when we talk. Especially when we have an argument. She said that she likes it when I'm not giving in until I get the answers I want.

This is one of those moments. I'm not giving in, until I know what the hell happened, and what made Skeeter unwillingly break up with Gale.

"I know", she says and pets Savannah. "I just don't want to!"

"But you're gonna", I snap at her, not even sorry for doing it.

"Why?"

"So we can help you", Annie says.

"No one can help me", Skeeter snaps.

Uh oh. I think I might know what it is.

"Skeeter, just tell us, we're not going to shout it out over the whole town", I say.

Skeeter sighs.

"Alright! My mother made me. She was seconds away of drowning Savannah in the sink because she wanted to force me to break up with Gale!" She says. "I'm mother is an evil witch who doesn't want me to be happy even for a second, is that the answer you wanted?! Are you satisfied now?!"

I knew it. Poor Skeeter.

But even though anyone can hear how much pain she's in, not a single tear escapes her eyes. Not one. She's a lot stronger than I thought she was.

"Skeeter..." I say carefully and put a hand on Skeeter's shoulder.

"Don't!" She says sharply and shakes off my hand. "I don't need your pity, I want you to act as if everything is perfect".

Why would she want us to do that? She's obviously hurting over all of this, so why would she want us to pretend?

"And don't even dare tell Gale this!" Skeeter says. "He can't know, he has to think that I don't love him anymore".

"But you do", Annie says.

"But he can't know that!"
