Jane stood under the shower, letting the water pour over her body, mingling with the tears rolling down her face. Paul had gone downstairs after they had made love. She shook her head, wishing that one day he might understand the difference between the need to be held and reassured and the need for sex. She began to wash her hair, thoughts whirling round her head about life and the mess she was in. Was mess a bit strong a word to describe the situation? She didn't think so!!
"Jane!"
Paul called her from the bedroom. She ignored him. He knocked on the door.
"Jane love, you nearly done? I've just rung Brian... about a date."
"One minute." She finished her shower and then, after wrapping a towel around herself, she walked back into the bedroom. "What's the matter?"
"I've just come off the phone with Brian. He's offered to help sort out the wedding. He's ringing the registry office now"
"You want to get married in a registry office?"
Paul looked surprised."Why? Where were you thinking of?"
She shrugged. "I hadn't expected to be getting married yet Paul, so it's not something I'd ever thought about!"
Before Paul could say anything the phone rang. He answered the phone in the bedroom.
"Hi Brian." She watched as he listened. "Yes....OK. Got that. We'll discuss and ring you back. OK? Thanks. Bye." He came and sat on the side of the bed and patted the space. Jane joined him in silence. "Brian's got us three possible dates love. To get married? Last two days in July or the 2nd August?"
"It's up to you Paul. I don't mind."
"Jane? Talk to me please. What's wrong love?"
"I don't want to get married and I don't want a baby!"
"But I thought...." He paused, "Is it me? Is it something I've done?"
"No, I just didn't see myself married for another five years or so and children even further away!" She wiped away the tears, "All this feels so... so wrong! The timing...everything!"
He went over to her and took her hand. He lead her back to sit on the bed. "Oh Jane. Look love, it might not be ideal but it's happened so we need to make the best of it!"
"You really think so?"
"Yes." He watched her for a moment.
"Leave me alone for a while Paul please. I'm so tired."
"OK." He stood up, confused and worried, "But what shall I tell Brian? About the dates I mean?"
"You decided. I'll fit in!"
"You're sure?"
"I said so didn't I!" She snapped at him, "Can I get some sleep now?"
"I bring you some lunch up later." He told her softly, "Have a good rest Jane love. " He kissed her on the cheek and quietly left the room.
Sighing, she climbed into bed. She was tired but angry at herself for treating Paul like she had. It wasn't his fault entirely that they were now pregnant. The failure of the pill was down to something she'd done. She closed her eyes and tried to relax, promising herself that when she went downstairs again, she would apologise to Paul and try to be more enthusiastic about what was happening!
Paul dialed the very familiar number.
"Hello."
"Hi John, it's Paul."
"Right there Macca?" His friend greeted him cheerfully, "What can I do for you?"
