As Buffy Summers walked up the steps of Sunnydale High, after saying goodbye to her mother, she unknowingly caught the attention of many students. A few in particular. Alexander Harris, also known as Xander, continued to stare in awe at the beautiful girl whilst riding his skateboard. That was until he crashed into a railing causing him to fall on his back. A pretty, shy girl called Willow Rosenberg smiled down at the boy whom she has secretly been loving. Xander looked at his best friend.
"Willow," he said "you're so very much the person I wanted to see." He stood up and started walking with her.
"Oh really?" she asked, trying to hide her excitement which Xander seemed oblivious to.
"Yeah. You know, I kind of had a problem with the math." he elaborated.
"Which part?" she asked, now hiding her disappointment.
"The math. Can you help me tonight? Please? Be my study buddy?"
"Well, what's in it for me?"
He paused, thinking, "A shiny nickel..."
"Okay. Do you have "Theories in Trig?" You should check it out."
He looked at her confused. "Check it out?"
"From the library. Where the books live."
He nodded his head. "Right. I'm there. See I want to change."
The pair went through the doors, smiling at each other. They passed by a girl who had been watching Buffy, knowing exactly who and what she is.
Buffy had met Cordelia Chase, a beautiful and popular girl who had a tendency to bully those who she thought should be publicly known as nerds.
"You transferred from Hemery, right ? In L.A.?" she asked Buffy, considering the option of letting her into her popular group.
"Yeah"
"Oh! I would kill to live in L.A. Being that close to that close to that many shoes... Why'd you come here?"
"Because my Mom moved, is the reason I mean we both moved. But my Mom wanted to." Buffy answered as she stumbled over her words looking for an excuse.
"Well, you'll be okay in no time. Of course we do have to test your coolness factor. You're from L.A., so you can skip the written, but, let's see... Vamp nail polish."
"Over?" Buffy answered tentatively.
"SO over. James Spader."
Buffy smiled giddily "He needs to call me."
"Frappachinos?"
"Trendy but tasty."
"John Tesh."
"The Devil?"
"Well, that was pretty much a gimme but you passed."
Buffy jokingly sighed of relief. "Oh, good." They smiled and walked onwards down the hall. They eventually came to stop by a water fountain which Willow was using.
"Willow! Nice dress." Cordelia began to 'compliment' her which caused Willow to smile lightly. "Good to know you've seen the softer side of Sears."
Buffy looked at her supposedly new friend in shock at how mean she was acting. Willow looked down and said shyly. "Well my Mom picked it out."
"No wonder you're such a guy-magnet. Are you done?"
Willow realized that Cordelia wanted her to move. "Oh." Just as she was about to leave, the girl they had passed by earlier walked up to them.
"Last time I checked, people had to wait their turn... Or has it changed and I just wasn't notified?"
The girl had an English accent, that much was clear. Willow and Cordelia were temporarily shocked as the girl had not only spoken, but had stuck up for Willow. Buffy was confused as to why it was so shocking for this girl to speak. After a few seconds Cordelia got over her shock.
"Excuse me, since when did you exist?" she asked sarcastically.
The girl only scoffed and rolled her eyes in response. She eyed Buffy in suspicion for a moment before she walked away. Willow left too, as there was no one to defend her and she certainly was not prepared to defend herself. Cordelia took Willow's place at the fountain and turned to Buffy.
"You wanna fit in here, the first rule is "know your losers". Once you can identify them all by sight, they're a lot easier to avoid."
As Cordelia bent down to take a drink, Buffy looked at Willow's retreating form sadly. Although, she couldn't shake off the feeling that she knew who that girl was and the girl knew what Buffy was.
Cordelia had shown Buffy the way to the library before going off and leaving Buffy to get her books herself. When Buffy entered the library it seemed as though she was the only one there."Hello... Is anybody here?" she called out as she looked around. She didn't notice that someone was coming up behind her and so she was startled when she felt a hand touch her shoulder. She spun around only to find the librarian. "Anybody's here."
Rupert Giles, who had recently moved to Sunnydale to become the new librarian, looked at her and asked in his British accent. "Can I help you?"
"I was looking for some, well, books. I'm new."
"Miss Summers." he said as realisation dawned on him.
"Good call." she confirmed, slightly perplexed at how he knew who she was . "I guess I'm the only new kid."
"I'm Mr Giles, the librarian." he introduced himself as he lead her to the check out desk.
"Great. So do you have, uh-" but he cut her off while he pulled out a book from under the desk.
"I know exactly what you're after."
He placed a book on top of the desk in front of Buffy so she could see it. It was big and leather bound and had in bold letters 'VAMPYR'. Buffy's face quickly changed to one of concern and fear as she read what is on the book in front of her.
"That's not what I'm looking for."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm way sure."
"My mistake." though he still looked at her curiously. As he bent down to put the book away she walked quickly out of the room.
"So what is to you said-" but she had already gone.
The pair didn't notice the mysterious girl from the water fountain had been watching them from the stacks with a small smirk on her face.
