I had found a nearby entrance to the tunnels in a deserted street. It had been twenty minutes already and I was about to go in after her when the grating was being moved. I saw Xander climb out and gave him a hand, even though I had no idea what he was doing here. Buffy was next to climb out, but a hand grabbed onto her ankle. Xander and I pulled her up and the hand started to burn and smoke from the sunlight so we were able to bring her out of the tunnel completely.
"Did I miss something?" I asked them, sarcastically. "Where's Jesse?" Neither of them answered and I knew what happened immediately.
Buffy and Xander explained that Jesse had been turned into a vampire by the they got there and the whole thing was a trap. We walked into the library where Willow and Giles were waiting.
"Did you find Jesse?" Willow asked sceptically.
"Yeah." Xander answered.
"Was he dead?"
"Worse." I told her and she sits down, shocked at the news.
"I'm sorry, Willow. We were too late. And they were waiting for us." Buffy explained.
"At least you three are okay."
Xander kicked a bin over making us jump. "I don't like vampires. I'm gonna take a stand and say they're not good."
"So, Giles, you got anything that can make this day worse?" Buffy asked.
"How about the end of the world?"
"We knew we could count on you." I told him.
"This is what we know. Some sixty years ago a very old, very powerful vampire came to this shore, not just to feed."
"He came cos this town's a mystical whoozit."
"Yes. The Spanish who first settled here called it 'Boca del Infierno'- roughly translated 'Hellmouth'. A sort of, um, portal between this reality and the next. This vampire hoped to open it."
"Bring the demons back." Buffy said.
"End Humanity." I added.
"End of the world." Xander finished.
"But he blew it. Or, I mean, there was an earthquake that swallowed half the town, and him too." Willow chimed in.
"You see, opening dimensional portals is a tricky business. Odds are he got himself stuck, rather like a cork in a bottle." Giles clarified
"And this Harvest thing is to get him out?" Xander asked.
"It comes once in a century, on this night. The Master can draw power|from one of his minions while it feeds. Enough power to break free|and open the portal. The minion is called the Vessel, and he bears this symbol."
Giles showed us a picture of three pointed star.
"So, I dust anyone sporting that symbol, and no Harvest." Buffy asked.
"Simply put, yes." I said.
"Where is this get-together being held?"
"Well, there are a number of possibilities-" Giles started before Xander interrupted.
"They're going to the Bronze."
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"All those tasty young morsels everywhere? That's where Jesse's gonna be. Trust me."
"Then we should get there." I called.
"She's right, the sun will be down before long." Giles agreed with me.
We were heading towards the door when Buffy stopped. "I gotta make a stop. Won't take long."
"What for?" Giles questioned.
"Supplies." She answered before walking home.
Buffy took ages before she finally came back. We rushed to the Bronze as fast as we could. We were about to go in but the door wouldn't open.
"It's locked." Buffy pointed out.
"We're too late." Giles said disappointedly.
" I didn't know I'd get grounded!" Buffy defended herself.
"Can you break it?" Xander asked Buffy, referring to the door.
"No, not that thing. You try the back entrance. I'll find my own way."
"Right." I agreed. "Come on."
"Wait, guys." Buffy stopped us and handed out some weapons. "Here. You get the exit cleared and the people out. That's all. Don't go Wild Bunch on me."
"Uh see you inside, then." Giles told her as he, Willow and Xander ran off.
"Buffy, listen," I began. "Buffy you're smart, okay so use that."
"Thanks." She smiled then frowned. "I think. Now go."
I did as she asked and ran after the other three.
We all burst through the doors and started helping people out while fighting off vampires. Eventually everyone was outside and we were just left with the vampires. Buffy was fighting off Luke who was the Vessel, though she was struggling as he was much stronger than her. Xander had just dusted Jesse, Willow saved Giles from the blonde vampire by throwing holy water at her face and she ran off. I had fought and dusted many vampires and there was only a few vampires left including Luke.
I saw Buffy swing the cymbal stand at Luke, however he just grinned. "You forget. Metal can't hurt me."
"There's something you forget about, too... Sunrise." She throws the cymbal stand at the window above them. Light streams in and Luke cowers back covering his face with his hands. He stops when he noticed he wasn't burning and looked at the streetlight puzzled. Buffy sneaks up behind him, while he was distracted, and plunges the stake through his heart.
"It's in about nine hours, moron." Buffy quipped.
Luke stumbled to the edge of the stage until he falls down and explodes into dust. Buffy stood over where he once was, breathing heavily. The vampires looked from the dust to Buffy, who slowly and intimidatingly turned her gaze on them. She truly looked like a Slayer. The vampires were terrified of her and ran off. We all meet up in the middle of the room looking at the damage the Harvest had caused.
"I take it it's over." Giles said.
"Did we win?" Willow asked.
"Well, we averted the Apocalypse." I pointed out.
"Yeah, you gotta give us points for that." Buffy agreed.
"One thing's for sure. Nothing is ever going to be the same." Xander told us.
We were at school now and everybody was pretending last night never happened. They were all making up excuses for it and spreading rumours about Buffy knowing the 'guys' from the 'gang' that attacked the Bronze. And it was obvious that Cordelia was starting the rumours and calling Buffy things like 'freak show'.
"Well, what exactly were you expecting?" Buffy asked Xander.
"I don't know? Something. The dead rose! We should've at least had an assembly."
"People have a tendency to rationalize what they can and forget what they can't." Giles explained.
"Believe me, I've seen it happen." Buffy told them.
"Well, I'll never forget it. None of it." Willow said.
"Good. Then maybe next time you'll be prepared." I told her.
"Next time?" Xander asked, incredulously.
"Next time is why?" Willow asked.
"We stopped the Master from freeing himself and opening the mouth of Hell. Doesn't mean he'll stop trying. I'd say the fun is just beginning." Giles said.
"More vampires?"
"Not just vampires. The next threat we face may be something quite different." I warned them.
"I can hardly wait." Buffy said, nonchalantly.
"We are at the centre of a mystical convergence here. We may, in fact, stand between the Earth and its total destruction." Giles explained.
"I gotta look on the bright side. Maybe I can get kicked out of school." Buffy said as the three started to walk away to class.
"Hey, that's a plan. 'Cause a lot of schools aren't on Hell mouths." Xander said sarcastically.
"You could blow something up. They're strict about that." Willow joined in.
"I was thinking of a more subtle approach, you know. Like excessive not studying."
"The Earth is doomed!" Giles sighed.
I smirked and nodded. "Oh yeah." I ran to catch up with them. "Hey you could always start a fight with Cordelia."
Buffy pondered it for a moment. "I'm sure I could take her." We all laughed and headed for class.
