At dinner, Pete's Mom tells the family that Patrick isn't allowed to watch the news.
"Why?" Pete asked.
"Just because he's not, okay? And if you see him, you need to come and tell me."
"Can he still watch Cartoons?"
Pete's Dad nodded. "Yes, of course. Just make sure to tell us if he tries to change it."
"Where is Patrick?" Hillary asked, looking around the table.
"Patrick, um, Patrick went to bed early. He's not had a very good day."
Pete was confused. "Why not? All he did was sit around here and watch TV."
"It was a bad day. Patrick, um..." Pete's Mom flustered for something to say to try and explain the complexity of the situation to her three young ones.
"Look, he's just had a bad day. That's all you need to know." Pete's Dad said finally.
"When is he coming to school?" Hillary asked.
"Not for a while."
"Why doesn't he speak?" Pete questioned. "He's really quiet."
"He's still really scared, Peter. Imagine if all of a sudden, you were sent to live with a whole new family that you didn't know. Would you be happy?"
"No..." Pete muttered.
"Well, that's what's happened with Patrick. So we're all doing our best to make sure he fits in and feels welcome."
Pete nodded. "Okay. How long until that happens?"
Pete's Mom and Dad looked at each other for a second.
"Well, um, we're not sure..." Pete's Dad explained awkwardly. "It could be a week, it could be several months."
Pete frowned. "And how long until he goes to school?"
"Same answer. We don't know."
"That's weird." Hillary stated.
"Also, on Saturday morning, we're all going down to see Dr Urie." Pete's Mom explained.
"Who's Dr Urie?" Pete asked.
"Do you remember the man who was here on Thursday afternoon?"
"Oh, yeah. Forehead guy. Why do we have to go and see him?"
"We're just going to do some family games and stuff with Patrick."
"That sounds boring."
"Well, you're going. We're all going."
Pete scowled and folded his arms. This kid was driving him nuts.
