That night at dinner, there were no knives on the table. Pete's Mom had cut up everyone's dinner beforehand, and all the knives were at the top of the cupboard where only Pete's Dad could reach them.
Patrick didn't say anything. He kept his head bowed, and only ate a small amount, even though Pete's parents tried to get him to eat more.
Pete tried to fill the silence with conversation about the upcoming summer break. They weren't going away this year, but Pete's Dad was taking some time off work to spend with them so they could build a treehouse in their backyard, one for Pete and Patrick to play in all the time.
Pete was very excited at that prospect.
Patrick was indifferent about the whole thing and was running his fingers over the points of the fork.
After dinner, he sat down with his notebook while Pete did his homework. He watched as Patrick scribbled madly, wrote a small amount, scribbled some more, cried for a while, and then continued scribbling.
"Pat? You okay?" He asked softly.
Patrick scribbled faster, before tearing the page out and tearing it up.
"Pat?" Pete asked again, nervously.
Patrick looked up at him, and then took a slow deep breath. "I-I'm s-sorry..."
"It's okay, it's okay." Pete assured. "Don't be sad. I don't like it when you're sad."
"B-But you h-hate me?"
"I don't anymore. I used to, but now I just wanna be friends."
"B-But-"
"I wanna be friends Patrick. I don't hate you anymore. I'm gonna be nice."
Patrick didn't say anything for a long time. Then he packed his notebook and pencils up, before disappearing upstairs to bed.
Hey everyone!
First off, thank you so much for 2k reads! It means the absolute world to me!
But this author's note has a much more exciting purpose than just a thank you. Troubled Soul will be coming to a close soon, and to celebrate the end of this book, I'm going to hold a competition! The task is to draw your favourite scene from this book. Entries can be emailed to me (secretjungle88@gmail.com) or posted in an art or random book and tagged me in it so I know that it's there. Stay awesome,
~Zoe

Fanfiction"So why doesn't he go to school?" Andy asked. "I think he's just too weird." Pete replied. Pete's parents have a new kid. A weird kid. A kid who always looks likes he's going to cry and walks funny. A foster kid. Pete doesn't like him. Not at all.
