Patrick got home very, very late that night. So late that it was probably past midnight.
Pete was awake, even though his father had sent him to bed and threatened him with missing a baseball game if he refused to go, so he just laid on his bunk in silence.
Patrick was still sniffling when Pete's Mom brought him into the room.
"Shh, Shh, okay Pattycakes, let's get you ready for bed."
Patrick didn't say anything, just took his glasses off and placed them on the nightstand.
Pete's Mom got him dressed into some comfy-looking pyjamas, before tucking him into bed. Patrick's sniffles were still loud, and so Pete's Mom just hugged him tightly until he stopped.
"If you ever feel like it's too much, just come and lie with me and Peter in our bed, okay?" Pete's Mom told him.
Patrick nodded slightly.
Pete's Mom kissed his forehead. "Love you lots Patty. Sleep well Angel."
As soon as she left, Patrick started crying again. Pete was silently weighing up his options.
"Psst!" he hissed. "What's wrong?"
Patrick flicked his lamp on, illuminating his teary face.
"Why are you sad?" Pete asked.
Patrick didn't say anything.
Pete climbed down and sat next to him. "Patrick, what's wrong?"
There were a few minutes of silence.
"Why won't you talk to me?" Pete asked.
"B-Because I d-don't want y-you to f-feel this w-way too."
"I'm not going to if you tell me." Pete coaxed.
Patrick shook his head, and pulled the blankets up around him.
Pete's Mom turned the light on. "What's going on in here?"
Patrick pulled the blankets over his head.
"I was just asking what was wrong." Pete told her. "He won't tell me anything."
"It's none of your business Pete." She tells him, sitting down and gently patting the Patrick-shaped lump in the bedsheets.
Pete frowned. "But I wanna know."
"You can't. Now go to bed and get some sleep."
Pete's Mom ended up taking Patrick back to her room to sleep for the 2nd night in a row.
Pete wants to sleep, but something in the room is making it too quiet.
He didn't get a single wink that night.
