BRIAN CHRISTIAN HARVARD

"The delivery has been made Sir, the shop just called."

"Thanks Triston." I nodded towards our butler.

"Anything else you need sire?"

"I think I'm good. Have you prepared the car and the items?"

"It's already inside sir. Everything is ready."

"Good. I'll be downstairs in a minute."

Triston made a bow and exited my room. I glanced at the old grandfather clock, it's almost time that I finish dressing up. I looked at myself in the large mirror, I was wearing the suit and tie that Arya picked for me. A slow smile formed on my lips. Just remembering her makes me want to bail out from the prom and whisk her away someplace else.

I reached towards an intricate small black box, inside was an intricate black mask, our promenade has a masquerade theme, and instead of a hotel, we are doing it on the school grounds, which is kind of cheap of the admins.

I guess since our school sympathizes with the poor, its only befitting that they don't do grand activities.

I didn't pay much attention to how I look, so I just messed up my hair a bit. Why would I even take an effort to look good when the girl I wanted to impress isn't even there?

I buttoned up the last on my collars and adjusted my tie one last time then slung my outer jacket. I'll just put up the mask when I reached the venue. I descended the long stairs of the mansion and was surprised when I was greeted by a huge flash of a camera that made me shield my eyes.

"What the –

"My, my, Brian! I must admit, you've really grown towards the years. Look how handsome you are!"

I froze.

"Mama! I told you, you can't –

Cristie's voice echoed towards the silent hall then she stopped running when she saw that Mom and I saw each other.

"What? Am I not allowed to see my son?" Mom chuckled towards Cristie, she looked at me apologetically.

"What are you doing here?" I scowled towards the woman who gave birth to me. Because that's all she is, ever since she left my father she stopped being a mother to me, until my father died in an accident and Grandpa and Grandma took care of us.

"Well Christian, your sister here told me that you have a prom, and I just wanted to see you get properly dressed up even just for once."

"I.Am.Properly.Dressed.All.The.Time." I gritted every word irritably. The last time I saw this woman was when she left, she has no right to just appear and scold me about proper dress codes and decorum.

I know Cristie and this woman was still communicating. I didn't deny my sister a right towards having a mother.

"I'm staying here for a vacation Christian."

"Why would you even bother? I thought you don't like this country? Don't you hate everything that reminds you of poverty?"

My mom is a socialite, a daughter of a duke in a foreign country. I heard she ran away from home and ran towards our country to hide from her father, then she met my father but unfortunately, my father just came from a simple family and couldn't afford the riches that she was used to. In the end she left us for the money and her old life back in London.

I saw her took in a deep breath and for a moment, I saw sadness in her eyes. But it was such a short moment that I allowed myself to think that maybe, she's feeling a little regret about leaving us, especially about dad's death that she didn't even manage to visit the day of the funeral.

But then she shook her head as if shaking a thought away and stared at me, again, business-like.

"I bother Christian, because I'm here to talk about your future."

"Whatever do you mean?" I didn't know why but the way she stared at me made my stomach churn like I knew there was some trouble coming. I hate how she stares at me like I'm not her son at all, like I'm a property she could take a use of.

"Well, you're already on the right age, and I think you knew about your cousin running away from London."

I gripped the handle of the staircase. I couldn't help it because I think I know where this conversation is going.

"Just cut the chase will you?" I felt my voice rising. The anger building up in me.

"After graduation you're going to London to study for college. After Prince went missing at the palace, it is now your duty as the next heir to go home. I've already talked to your grandparents about it Christian, it's time you take responsibilities."
