The Face of an Angel
YR 2005
An eleven year old girl stepped inside on what seems to be an enclosed living room. The black leathered couch was inviting yet the girl is smart enough to know the reason why she's with a middle-aged woman wearing a conservative attire with a paper and pen on hand. She felt disgusted with the level of professionalism showed by the short haired lady and the formality of the whole place.
"Do you want something to drink?" She opened a mini fridge just beside the recliner. "I have apple juice, Pepsi, 7Up, what do you want?"
"7Up will do, thank you." She humbly smiled.
The lady handed her what she wants. She went back to her seat and slightly rested her back with an apple juice placed on the side table.
"Do you know why you're here?" The lady asked with a smile. The girl wanted to shrug because she knew it was part of her job to put her on ease and to create a space that is somewhat warm and welcoming.
"Because I'm having a nightmare every night and you're here to help me."
"Have you ever seen a person like me before?"
"No, this is my first time." The girl was sitting comfortably with her legs crossed.
"How does it feel?"
She knew it will be brain-expanding questions. A question, followed by another, and another, it's like a cycle over and over again until the lady changes map and get to the main point.
"It's a little daunting at first but now I'm fine." She lied.
She never felt scared in front of a stranger before.
"Yeah? Well that's a good sign." She sipped on her drink and then put it back on the table. "I heard you have a friend. What's her name again?"
"Althea, she's my best friend." Just saying her name makes the little girl smiled in ease.
"How is she?"
The girl looked down and sighed. "She's not okay."
"Why? What happened?"
"She lost both of her parents. Her dad died seven months ago because he got into a car accident. And just yesterday she found her mom on the floor... lifeless." The girl almost cried.
"You're with her yesterday right?"
The girl nodded.
"What did you saw?"
"Blood..." The girl started to sob as she tries to answer every question. "I saw a lot of blood flooding on the bathroom floor."
"Oh honey" She went near her and seated beside the girl. "Are you okay? Is that the reason why you're having nightmares?"
"N-No." She sniffed. "I'm having a nightmare because... because I can't stand seeing Althea like that." And then she started crying.
"I know honey, Althea didn't want to talk to me either. That's why I asked you." She rubbed the girl's back to console her.
"She became distant."
"Since when honey?"
"Since Kylie died." The girl knew that she had opened another case to tell. And this time, she's more than ready.
