The Unknown

YR 1995

"Congratulations ma'am. It's a healthy baby girl."

Despite of her heart disease, the woman is very fortunate for getting herself into a normal delivery. The child is a miracle indeed.

After cleaning up the newborn baby, the doctor lay her down directly into her mother's chest, covered with a warm blanket and a cap to keep the baby's head warm.

"What should we name her?" The father asked as he sits beside the woman.

"Brigid" She smiles. "I always love that name."

Both teary eyed as they stare at the sleeping little angel.

"What happened now?" The father asked again with a hint of sadness.

The woman reached for his hand. "Same as we planned."

"But Josephine, I don't want to marry your sister" The man exclaimed.

"You have to, that's what my father wants." She pleaded.

"But I'm in love with you!"

"I know" She started to cry. "It hurts me too. But we have to do a little sacrifice. You have to be there for my sister, she needs you."

Before they met, the man was already betrothed to her half-sister Laura. It was her father's request before he died. Since Laura is suffering from mild depression after seeing her own mother committing suicide, she became balmy and depressive. She is clearly head over heels with the man whom Josephine fell in love to. However, she decided to keep it to herself.

Without her knowledge, the guy knew he already loved her from the day he laid his eyes to Josephine. He never really cared about Laura, what they had was only for the benefit of both parties' businesses and future partnership. It was a fixed marriage.

"We're building a family now, are you really pushing me away? What about my daughter? She needs me too!"

The room envelopes heavy sorrow as they both cry.

"Take our daughter with you."

"What?!" He is shocked. "Are you out of your mind?"

"Tell her she's an orphan and needs home." She tried her best not to cry but it was clearly shown as her voice almost failed her.

"But ---"

"Shhh, it's okay. I will still be around." She kissed her baby lovingly. "I'm not going to let her hurt my child."

"And why are you doing this?" He said.

"Because it's the only way." She explained. "As soon as she finds out that I gave birth to your daughter, both of us may not survive."

He kissed her and whispered, "Whatever happens, I will always love you."

"I love you too... always."

"Brigid!"

The four-year old girl turned her head to Laura. "Mommy?"

"What the hell did you do to my canvas you son of a bi---"

"Laura stop!" The woman shouted. "It's not her fault."

"Stay away Josephine! I'm just teaching my daughter a lesson so back off!"
